Clinton Morrison: I don't think Ange Postecoglou will be at Tottenham next season

May 15, 2025 at 2:20 pm GMT+1

Ahead of next week's Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United, we sat down with Clinton Morrison to discuss the future of two under-fire managers.

Along with the race for the top five in the Premier League and the Championship play-offs, we've put some predictions alongside some of our top football betting offers.

So, looking ahead to the weekend, here's what Clinton had to say when speaking exclusively to Free Bets.

Ange's Future at Spurs

Q: Itโ€™s the Europa League final next week. Itโ€™s a big game for both clubs, but especially both managers - their seasons are hanging on next week arenโ€™t they?

Everything is on the line in the game, because the managers have put their whole seasons into the Europa League, and you can see how terrible they have been in the Premier League.

Itโ€™s a massive game for both, but in particular for Tottenham.

Even if he wins that, I donโ€™t think Ange stays at Tottenham next season, in my honest opinion.

I think the number of losses theyโ€™ve had in the Premier League isnโ€™t good enough, and they shouldnโ€™t be anywhere near that bottom half.

The same can be said for Manchester United, and Ruben Amorim has put all his eggs in the Europa League basket in order to get Champions League football, because it can help attract better players for next season.

Itโ€™s a massive trade-off. Tottenham havenโ€™t won a trophy in so long and Manchester United need to attract the players to get back into the Champions League because thatโ€™s what the fans want.

It is massive for both, and a real 50-50 call because you canโ€™t call it. Tottenham have beaten Manchester United three times this season, but that means nothing in a one-off final.

Q: Is it a hard one to predict because the sides have been so inconsistent in the Premier League, but decent in Europe?

We donโ€™t know whatโ€™s going to happen. Tottenham have injuries. Kulusevski has had a knee operation, Madison is out for the season and they are two key players.

Itโ€™s in the Europa League that the two sides have produced their best football this season, and they probably donโ€™t want to play this weekend in case they get any more injuries.

Q: And there is the potential for things to turn toxic for whoever loses

For sure. I still think Ruben Amorim will be at Manchester United next season. I think there is a project there and they will see it through even though they have been nowhere near good enough this season.

I think he will be given money to spend in the summer, get rid of players and be able to bring in his own players suited to his style of football and formation. So I think he will get time.

As for Ange, no, I donโ€™t think he will be there. Itโ€™s already a bit toxic at Tottenham having covered their game against Palace at the weekend.

Itโ€™s his second season and he could still win a trophy like he has always said. But even if he does win that trophy, I canโ€™t see him being there at the start of next season.

Premier League Top Five

Q: Itโ€™s all on the line in the battle for the top five over the next week or two. You fancied Villa if they beat Bournemouth last week, they did that so are you sticking to your prediction of them to get fifth?

I would back Villa to get fifth place, but if you look at the table theyโ€™re still not there.

Itโ€™s still in Chelseaโ€™s hands, and if they win their next game then it will go down to the Forest game at the end of the season. Villa have two games that you would expect them to get points from, but with goal difference - that could come back to bite them.

It will go right down to the wire. Newcastle, Man City and Arsenal are all sorted in my opinion, and then itโ€™s between Chelsea and Aston Villa.

I think the result at the weekend killed Forest, because they could have had a big decider against Chelsea on the final day, but all they can do now is beat West Ham and hope someone slips up.

But it will all go down to Forest v Chelsea on the final day

Q: Aston Villa have Spurs and Manchester United to play in their two games, that should be as easy as it getsโ€ฆ

They should get the job done against them.

I said Aston Villa last week, but I do think Chelsea could do it and beat Forest on the last day of the season.

They have Manchester United on Friday this week and they should get a result against them, but itโ€™s a cup final for Chelsea. If they win that, they then go to Forest and could win, so itโ€™s all in their hands.

Marinakis v Nuno

Q: With regards to Forest, what did you make of the scenes at the weekend when Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch and confronted Nuno? They released that statementโ€ฆ

They were talking about the Awoniyi injury werenโ€™t they? Because they couldnโ€™t make any more changes, so I get that but it doesnโ€™t look good.

He is the chairman, so he has the right to have a moan because he is the owner of the football club and is ambitious, but he shouldnโ€™t come onto the pitch and do that to Nuno. It just doesnโ€™t sit right with me.

Maybe call him into the office, and if you want to have a go by all means do so, because you are the owner. You should not do it on the pitch to a manager who has done a fantastic job though.

In previous seasons you have been fighting relegation and this manager has got you into an FA Cup semi-final and within touching distance of the Champions League. They might miss out on it, but Europa League football for Forest will help to bring back the glory days.

It didnโ€™t really sit right with me, and doesnโ€™t look good. Theyโ€™ve since released the statement, but it just doesnโ€™t sit right.

Q: And the fans will undoubtedly take Nunoโ€™s side, wonโ€™t they? Heโ€™s done a great job, Iโ€™m sure Marinakis would have snapped your hand off for these results at the start of the seasonโ€ฆ

Of course you would have taken that. He came out after and said European football was what they set out to achieve this season, so thatโ€™s fair enough.

He is obviously disappointed because if they had beaten Leicester theyโ€™d have had a great chance of getting in the Champions league. They still have a chance now, but a slim one where theyโ€™re relying on other results.

Q: Brentford are also in with a chance of European football next season if they can finish eighth. That would be a great story, wouldnโ€™t it?

It would be a great story. The job Thomas Frank has done has been fantastic, and a lot of the time he goes under the radar which is surprising to me because when the big jobs become available, his name is never in the reckoning.

He is a brilliant manager.

Looking at the front three with Mbuemo and Wissa in particular, they have been outstanding all year and their goal contributions have been through the roof. Thereโ€™s no surprise clubs looked at them in January and will come back again in the summer.

If they can get into Europe, it would be fantastic - not long ago we were talking about promotion from the Championship and survival in the Premier League, so to get into Europe would be a brilliant achievement.

With their run of fixtures, you would make them favourites to finish eighth ahead of Bournemouth and Brighton so they just have to keep going.

But Palace could beat Man City! Stranger things have happened, and then Brentford wouldnโ€™t get European football. I hope they miss out, no disrespect to Brentford because it would be great for Palace!

It will be brilliant for either club either way.

Championship Play-Offs

Q: In the EFL, weโ€™ve had the Championship play-offs this week and no surprises, Sheffield United got the job done.

I didnโ€™t want to be disrespectful to Bristol City fans, but that was always a possibility. Their fans at Brammall Lane in the second leg were outstanding but the tie was over after the sending off in the first leg and the way Sheffield United played was excellent. They were very professional in the second leg and got the job done.

They are the favourites to go up in the final. Finishing third, itโ€™s usually hard because the momentum might not be there but they coped just fine.

Q: And Sunderland got the job done too. It might not have been quite as comfortable, but they managed to turn things around after the tough end to the season they had

Credit to Sunderland, but I was a bit gutted because Coventry is my old club and I wanted another day out at Wembley to watch and support them! I thought they were probably the better team, but credit to Ballard, he scored a good goal and there were great scenes at the Stadium of Light.

No one really fancied Sunderland in the play-offs so fair play to them, but Regis Le Bris has got his players up for it and got it done.

The final will be a free hit for them because everyone thinks Sheffield United are favourites.

Q: And in terms of next season for Coventry, whatโ€™s the aim?

Frank has done a brilliant job from when he came into the club and they were near the bottom of the table. He turned it around magnificently.

Full credit must go to him, the staff and group of players. They will back him and give him money to be competitive for next season, but they will have to be looking at going up automatically or through the play-offs.

They will be title contenders next season, thatโ€™s for sure.
