What is Greyhound Racing?

A tradition in the UK and Ireland, greyhound racing continues to go strongly, with multiple daily meetings for those looking to place a bet.

Whether it’s a night out at the dogs, sitting at home watching the action on TV, or catching a live stream to cheer on a dog you fancy, getting involved with greyhound racing has never been as easy.

Each day, from morning until night, you can watch greyhound racing live, with bookmakers offering betting markets for those who would like to get involved. Check out the best greyhound betting sites!

How to Watch Greyhound Racing

As mentioned, watching greyhound racing has never been easier than it is now. If you can’t make the track, fear not, thanks to live streaming online plus live TV coverage, you will never be too far away from the action.

Bookmakers cover many meetings each day, and if you want to watch on TV, then there’s the option to do that either on Sky Sports Racing or through RPGTV, also available on Sky.

Daily Greyhound Racing Tips

One of the big positives with greyhound racing, just like horse racing, is that you can watch the action every day. You don’t have to wait a week until the next event, like with some sports - greyhound racing takes place on a daily basis.

On top of that, one big advantage over horse racing is the time the meetings occur. From early morning action to afternoon racing and then multiple evening meetings, often the biggest of the day, it doesn’t matter what time you are looking to bet, there is likely to be something just around the corner.

A typical midweek day will see double-figure greyhound meetings taking place, and more often than not, they all have at least 10 races on the card. Given all of those opportunities, greyhound racing is an excellent sport for those looking to bet on a regular basis rather than waiting days for the next event to come around.

Greyhound Betting Strategy

When you are betting on any sport, you should always have a strategy, and greyhounds are no different.

Put together your selections using the same strategy. This can be strategies such as singles on outsiders, multiple bets on favourites, or even picking the same trap number if you want something simple that doesn’t require looking at the form.

In a similar fashion to horse racing, stick with the strategy and look for ways to enhance and improve it in order to try and make your betting as successful as possible.

Just like horse racing, greyhound racing is a sport you can bet on in multiple ways. Here are just some of the most popular greyhound racing bets.

  • Win betting
  • Forecast or reverse forecast
  • Tricast or combination tricast
  • Lucky 15/31/63
  • Acca’s and other multiples

Greyhound Betting Markets

With just six runners in each race, each way betting on greyhounds is limited to just the first and second dogs home, and for that reason, it is not very popular.

When it comes to greyhound racing, for those looking to find an alternative to the win market, forecasts and tricasts are the bets that offer that.

If you are looking at a forecast, the goal is to pick out the dog that wins the race and the dog that finishes second. You can do this with one single bet, known as a straight forecast, where you need to get the order correct, or as two bets, a reverse forecast, where you back the two dogs to finish first and second in any order.

The same can be done with a tricast, but this time around, it’s tougher because you are trying to predict the first, second and third. A straight tricast is one bet, where you predict the first, second and third in the correct order, or alternatively, a combination tricast can be placed.

This is six bets and covers every possible combination of the first three home in different orders, so it doesn’t matter which of your three dogs comes in the positions as long as they are the first three home.

What is the best trap to bet on greyhound racing?

There is no right or wrong answer here, but you could divide this into low or high numbers, depending if winners are coming from the inside or outside. If the inside is being favoured, look at traps 1, 2 and 3 or if the outside is being favoured, look at traps 4, 5 and 6.

What percentage of greyhound favourites win?

The number will vary for each greyhound racing track, and changes all the time depending on races that take place but it works out at around 30% of favourites win their race.
