Boxing Betting Explained: Your Complete Guide to the Sport
Betting on boxing is one of the most popular options for punters. As such, we’re looking at everything you need for a successful boxing betting strategy.
How to Bet on Boxing
Boxing betting is massive for bookies. Just about every fight offers loads of boxing betting odds to give its customers a variety of options to choose from. When it comes to getting the most bang for your buck, you’ve got to consider the bookies. Not every sportsbook will offer the same boxing odds or line – particularly between opponents that are unevenly matched. The best way to understand how to bet on boxing, and win, is to read up on boxing betting tips (and welcome bonuses) and bet with the bookie that provides you with the most.
All you’ve got to do is register an account – look for boxing free bets, generally in the form of a sign-up offer – and deposit money. We recommend reading up on boxing betting tips also, as most bookies provide guides on their sites.
How is a Winner Declared
When it comes to winning, there are a load of different outcomes in boxing betting.
- KO/Knockout: A fighter is knocked down and cannot beat the referee’s count
- TKO/Technical Knockout: A fighter is knocked down and gets up in time to beat the count, but the referee stops the fight as the player is unable to continue.
- DQ/Opponent Disqualified: This is, typically, due to one fighter repeatedly violation rules and fouling the opponent. However, if both are disqualified, it’s deemed ‘no contest’.
- TD/Technical Decision: Generally, this refers to a fight stopping due to one fighter deemed unfit to continue. The fight must pass a certain number of rounds as per the specific competition before the fight goes to the judges, who will then decide the winner. If the fight doesn’t achieve the desired number of rounds, it is labelled a Technical Draw.
- MD/Majority Decision: Two of the three judges vote in favour of a particular fighter, and the third judge votes for the opponent.
- SD/Split Decision: Two of the judges vote for one fighter, and the third for the other.
- RTD/Opponent Retired: A boxer returns to his corner but doesn’t come back into the fight, as they are deemed unfit to continue.
How to Pick a Winner
It’s always best to look at boxing betting predictions. The best way to win on boxing is to know your stuff, and do plenty of research. However, don’t overestimate recent form. Boxing betting odds will always swing in favour of those that have performed well in their last couple of matches. But, if these two opponents have fought before and it was hard to separate them, do your research before laying money on the favourite. Likewise, don’t be fooled by who can shout the loudest. Boxing is a game of ‘trash talk’, and is also a popularity contest. Crowd-pleasing boxers always tend to be over-bet by punters, so don’t bet with your emotions.
Stick to what you know, such as the boxing styles, the weight of both boxers and their body types for the specific fight. Likewise, their pre-fight preparations should also be considered, such as how much training and, with the likes of Ricky Hatton, how much they celebrate before the event.
Benefit from the Betting Markets
There are plenty of boxing betting markets, with the most popular ‘fight outright’. This is the official winner and doesn’t, typically, offer significant returns – especially for evenly matched opponents. The fight outcome is which fighter to win and whether on KO, points or decision.
Knockdown specials offer substantial boxing betting odds. To win, the fighter must be knocked out and beat the count, or the referee deems the opponent unable to continue even if they beat the count. Round knockdown betting refers to which round the fighter will go down, and total knockdowns are how many they will be in the match. You can also bet under and over with total knockdowns. For these bets, you’ll have to do your research, but they offer higher returns.
Understand the Odds
Most bookies offer boxing betting odds in fractions, with decimal available. For ease of explanation, if the match has odds of 9/1, for every £1 you bet, you’ll win £9.
- 9/1 – 10% chance the event will occur
- 4/1 – 20%
- 1/1 – 50%
- ¼ – 80% and so on
It’s important to note fractional odds do not include the stake placed.
Boxing Betting Offers & Enhanced Odds
Naturally, with boxers talking themselves up more than Donald Trump on an election campaign, the bookies are too. And they’re putting their money where their mouth is.
The art of pugilism is always great for a bookie as they love to offer out boxing tips and the best free bet boxing offers. Well, they have to when it costs the earth to order the fight in the first place!
Similarly, Betfair are going all in on boxing betting with this fight, they’re odds of 40/1 on McGregor to win in 60 seconds are incredibly generous given the pre-fight previews.
No matter what the fight though, it’s important to make the most of boxing betting offers as undercards can be as rewarding as sticking a fiver on Mayweather to go the distance.
At Betfair they’re excellent on offering boxing betting offers and enhanced odds, whether you’re a new customer or a returning one.
Along with the usual boxing offers, the actual betting markets available provide lots of flexibility so you can choose the exact outcome you feel is going to happen. Of course you have the normal win-draw-win markets, but beyond that the “Method of Victory”, “Round Betting” and “Total Rounds” markets provide a trio of hugely popular boxing betting markets where punters express their opinions on a boxing match by way of a bet.
Boxing Betting Tips
Like many sports, studying the field is the best way to back a boxer. While it can end in a heartbeat no matter whether you’re Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury, or Johnny Tyson from down the road, one punch can change everything.
But you can pick a winner, and here’s the best way to do it…
Study The Form
Form is key in boxing and if your fighter has been a knockout king, it’s likely he will be again. For example, Joshua’s fight against Klitschko way back in 2017 saw a man that has never been the distance before. All the top boxing tipsters thought it wouldn’t go the distance. Why back a man to go the distance if he’s never been there?
Check Out The Opponent
Too many fight’s are hand-picked nowadays. Make sure you don’t fall foul to one of these. Check out the opponent as much as you check out your favoured fighter. Study their form and if they’re simply career fighters that spend their time get knocked out, don’t put money on them going any further than a few rounds.
Betting On A Full Night? Be Flexible…
Undercards can often cause the bigger shocks, so be flexible in your betting if you’re planning a night of boxing betting. If you lose on one fight, don’t try and make your money back on the next. Keep a strategy and by the time the headline act comes out you’ll still be punching way above your weight.
