Is Russell Martin Under Threat at Leicester? Where Things Stand

August 22, 2026 at 7:57 pm GMT+1

Russell Martin is facing his first real test at Leicester City just two games into a three-year deal, after a 2- 1 home defeat to Burton Albion on Saturday left fans booing at full-time.

Leicester played for more than an hour with 10 men after Oliver Skipp was sent off, but conceding twice inside the opening 25 minutes only added to the frustration, leaving Martin with just one point from his first two league games in charge.

Martin did not shy away from the situation afterwards, admitting: "We have to have some really honest conversations. I take responsibility as a manager."

It's the sort of managerial storyline punters will want to keep an eye on at the top UK betting sites, even though no bookmaker has yet priced up a market on Martin's future.

Here at Free Bets, we'll be tracking the situation at the King Power and will update this page if a market opens or the pressure on Martin increases.

Will Leicester sack Russell Martin?

A Defence That Was Exposed, Not Just Unlucky

Leicestershire Live's post-match analysis highlighted a specific problem rather than simply putting the defeat down to bad luck.

City had no recognised centre back on the bench against Burton, just as they did at Notts County, leaving Martin with limited options when players struggled under pressure at the back.

That's particularly significant given Martin's preference for building from the defence, an approach that came under scrutiny during his spells at Southampton and Rangers.

He's now trying to implement that style with a League One squad that has been heavily weakened during the summer, making the job even more difficult.

Why the Squad Is Thin

The lack of defensive depth is no accident.

Leicester have effectively made much of the squad available for transfer as King Power looks to reduce the wage bill, with high earners including Harry Winks, Ricardo Pereira and Jordan Ayew already departing this summer.

Harry Souttar is also reportedly close to a move to Sheffield United, further highlighting the difficult situation Martin is trying to manage.

The Leicester boss is therefore being judged on results while the squad continues to change around him, which is a very different challenge to simply getting the best out of an established group of players.

Why There Is No Betting Market Yet

Unlike the Premier League's ongoing next manager to leave market, where bookmakers have already priced several candidates, there is currently no UK betting market covering Martin's Leicester future.

That's not particularly surprising given how early it is.

Martin has only managed two competitive games and signed a three-year contract in June, so bookmakers are likely to wait for a longer run of results or a more significant development before putting odds on his departure.

Leicester's Financial Situation

The club's financial position could also influence how quickly Leicester would be prepared to make a managerial change.

Leicester are currently up for sale, with King Power reportedly seeking around £222m, while concerns over the club's cash flow have added further uncertainty.

With the possibility of administration and an automatic 12-point deduction having been discussed, paying off a manager only weeks into a three-year contract would be an expensive decision for a club already under financial pressure.

What We're Watching

The next few results could be crucial for Martin, particularly if Leicester suffer another defeat and begin the season with three consecutive losses.

If the pressure continues to build, we could see bookmakers open a market on the Leicester boss, and we'll update this page with the latest odds and candidates as soon as that happens.
