Breeders' Cup Betting Tips

Our top tipsters, Alan Kelly and Charlie McCann have five tips for the action on Saturday evening, including a 15/2 fancy in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Alan Kelly’s Breeders’ Cup Tips

7:10pm Santa Anita - Warm Heart

I expect this Breeders’ Filly & Mare Turf to concern the two leading European principles, Inspiral from the John & Thady Gosden stable and Ballydoyle’s Warm Heart, with preference for the latter.

Whereas Inspiral comes here following victories in Deauville’s Jacques le Marois and the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket, Ryan Moore’s mount has had the better preparation since winning Longshamp’s Prix Vermeille in September.

Connections nominated this race for the daughter of Galileo straight after her victory in the Yorkshire Oaks, and their confidence can be rewarded with the fillies’ third Group/Grade 1 of the season. This trip of 1m 2f also has to be a concern for Frankie Dettori’s mount, who has yet to race beyond a mile.

9:50pm Santa Anita - Mostahdaf

While I think 1m 2f to be his best trip, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and Juddmonte International winner Mostahdaf is effective over these extra two furlongs, and I expect Jim Crowley’s mount to come out on top in a race likely to be dominated by European runners.

The son of Frankel will be fresher than most, having bypassed other possible targets since York, has arguably the best form in the race and should relish the expected ground conditions. Following Enable’s victory in 2018, the John & Thady Gosden stable can take this Grade 1 contest for a second time. Arc third Onesto can prove best of the rest.

11:25pm Santa Anita - Live In The Dream

Live In The Dream did us a big favour when winning York’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes (advised at 40/1) at the Ebor meeting, and connections can continue the dream with a victory for the four-year-old in this Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint worth over £400k to the winner.

Sean Kirrane’s mount has blistering early pace, a decent draw in stall five and races on a course which will suit the Prince Of Lir gelding much better than when finishing a promising fourth ( five and a half furlongs) on his debut in the US at Keeneland one month ago. Everything points to a massive run from Adam West’s charge.

Charlie McCann’s Breeders’ Cup Tips

9:50pm Santa Anita - Onesto

The Derby and Irish Champion Stakes winner Auguste Rodin is a worthy favourite and has an excellent draw in five. He will love the ground and returns from an eight-week lay-off, the perfect preparation.

If Dettori wins on King Of Steel, I will be amazed after such a hard race just two weeks ago. This is just an afterthought. And his draw in stall ten of twelve – there is a non-runner – is less than ideal.

I thought ONESTO ran a magnificent race in the Arc when coming from further back than the brilliant winner Ace Impact to finish third, bouncing off the fast ground – the official description a laughable good to soft. The winning time was 4.5 seconds below standard!

The French raider has a ground-saving draw in stall three, although he cannot afford to get too far back, given the runners will congregate to the rail. The lightly raced 4-year-old will need luck in running, but he should be the second favourite behind the Derby winner, and if he gets a clear passage, I think he will be very hard to beat.

10:40pm Santa Anita - Ushba Tesoro

They will go like the clappers in the Classic, and I hope they play into the hands of the Japanese raider and Dubai World Cup winner USHBA TESORO, who stays further and picked up the pieces out in Meydan back in the spring.

Any horse who can pick up Algiers – scratched from the Dirt Mile earlier in the card - as easily as the selection did in Meydan merits total respect, and the hope is that he doesn’t get too far back in the first half a mile. If he is within hailing distance at the top of the home straight, then I will be disappointed if he doesn’t finish faster than most.

He has only had one race since the Dubai World Cup, when he scored on dirt back in his native Japan in Grade 2 company in September. That should put him spot-on for tonight’s ultimate test.

Breeders' Cup Betting Tips & Stats Guide

When & Where Is The Breeders' Cup?

The Breeders' Cup is unique within horse racing in that it is not held at the same race track each year - it rotates between several tracks throughout the US.

This year is the 40th anniversary of the Breeders' Cup, and it is returning to Santa Anita in Arcadia, California, for the thirteenth time.

The 2023 Breeders' Cup will be held on Friday, November 3, and Saturday, November 4.

Breeders' Cup Runner’s & Odds

Saturday is the main day of action at the Breeders' Cup with nine Grade 1 contests, including the feature race of the whole meeting, the Breeders' Cup Classic that has been won through the years by some superstars of the sport, including Arrogate, American Pharoah, and Cigar.

Below are the confirmed race times for the 2023 Breeders' Cup.

The European challenge at Santa Anita will be spear-headed by trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has enjoyed unprecedented success in the Breeders' Cup over the years, including winning the Breeders' Cup Turf on six occasions, most recently with Highland Reel in 2016.

And O’Brien has an excellent chance to win the Turf again in 2023, with the Epsom and Irish Derby winner Auguste Rodin set to take his chance at Santa Anita.
