Constitution Hill Skips Another Race - What Is Nicky Henderson Really Avoiding?

Constitution Hill

Nicky Henderson told punters on Tuesday afternoon that withdrawing Constitution Hill from Windsor was about avoiding uncertainty.

Yet the horse was pulled four days before the race, his odds moved from 7/2 to 9/2 in under 24 hours at UK betting sites, and racegoers who may have paid to see him found out via an X post.

Here's the timeline.

In mid-July, Henderson named the August Stakes at Windsor on August 29 as the target for Constitution Hill's third Flat start. By August 11, he was "less and less optimistic" about the ground.

He had already identified the September Stakes at Kempton as cover, before Constitution Hill was entered at Windsor on August 24 as favourite, with Henderson still "hoping for rain."

The following day, with four days to go, he was withdrawn, and the target switched to Kempton on September 5.

That's four staging posts in six weeks for a horse who isn't injured, isn't behind in training and is, by Henderson's own admission, "in excellent shape."

It looks less like managing a comeback and more like carefully managing the circumstances around it.

Ground, Jockeys or Something Else?

The new detail this week is arguably more significant than the ground.

Henderson said he wants "one of the two jockeys who know him" - Oisin Murphy and Ryan Moore, who rode him to his two Flat wins - for the race that finally counts, and neither is available this weekend.

That's a perfectly fair reason to wait.

However, it wasn't mentioned on August 24, when the focus was still on the rain, and for punters following the betting market, that makes the latest explanation look more like another reason to delay the competitive test.

Why the Windsor Test Mattered

Windsor mattered because it promised a genuine examination, with White Birch, a Tattersalls Gold Cup winner, among the opposition alongside three horses rated 112.

Constitution Hill's Racing Post Rating for his Southwell win in February was 103, while his Kempton victory in March was rated 13lb lower after a bunched, steady pace.

Two starts, two wins, but still no answer to the key question: can he produce the same form against a genuinely competitive field?

Another Delay for Constitution Hill

That answer will now have to wait for the Group 3 September Stakes, which Henderson himself has described as "highly competitive."

Fine, but if the competitive test keeps moving whenever it gets close, the pattern itself becomes difficult to ignore.

None of this needs a villain.

Buckley and Henderson are entitled to protect a horse as valuable and popular as Constitution Hill, and nobody wants to see a fit, sound horse run on unsuitable ground simply to satisfy a fixture.

But the sequence of an entry, a market move, a withdrawal and a new explanation is unlikely to stop punters asking questions, with September 5 now the next chapter in the Constitution Hill "comeback" story.
