Daizen Maeda Next Club Odds: Where Will the Celtic Star Play Next?

July 2, 2026 at 1:03 pm GMT+1

Daizen Maeda next club odds are beginning to take shape, with the Celtic forward attracting serious transfer interest after an outstanding season in Glasgow and an impressive World Cup campaign with Japan.

The 28-year-old enjoyed the best form of his career in 2025/26, helping Celtic to a league and Scottish Cup double under Martin O'Neill.

Maeda scored in both the title-clinching win over Hearts and the Scottish Cup final before carrying that momentum onto the international stage.

Time is a key factor in any potential move.

Maeda has just one year left on his Celtic contract, which expires in the summer of 2027, leaving the Scottish champions with a decision to make this window rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Reports suggest Celtic value the forward at between £15m and £20m.

The Japan international has also hinted that he could be ready for the next step.

Speaking after Japan's World Cup exit to Brazil, Maeda admitted he "can't stay at my current level" and wanted to "take another step forward" – comments widely interpreted as an indication he is open to a move abroad.

O'Neill has done little to cool the speculation, admitting there will likely be "a queue of clubs" interested in signing one of Europe's most in-form forwards.

At Free Bets, we assess the leading contenders in the betting market and where Maeda could realistically end up this summer.

Brentford

Brentford have emerged as the most concrete link.

The Bees have been credited with genuine, long-standing interest, having monitored Maeda's form for both club and country throughout the season.

The move makes stylistic sense - Brentford's high-energy, pressing approach suits Maeda's relentless running, and the club has a strong record of recruiting and improving attackers before selling them on at a profit.

Having previously had to replace the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, a proven, hard-working forward available at a reasonable fee fits their model neatly, and this is not a new interest - they were credited with tracking him in previous windows too.

Regular Premier League football is exactly the "step forward" Maeda has spoken about, and as things stand, they look the frontrunners.

Stay at Celtic

For all the exit talk, staying at Celtic cannot be dismissed.

No formal bid had been lodged as things stand, and with a year still left on his deal, Celtic retain some leverage over any suitor.

It is also worth remembering that Celtic dug their heels in a year ago, blocking a move late in the window when they could not source a replacement in time - and they could do so again if the right deal fails to materialise.

The forward has also sent mixed messages, saying he wants to "continue doing my best in Scotland" even as he hinted at a move.

O'Neill values him highly, and with Champions League qualifiers looming and another Scottish Premiership title defence to plan for, Celtic would prefer to keep their talisman - though a willingness to cash in rather than lose him for free in 2027 tilts this towards a sale.

Everton

If Maeda does make the move to England, Everton have been among the most persistent admirers.

They were repeatedly linked across the season as they looked to strengthen a forward line that has lacked a consistent goal threat, with David Moyes keen to add quality and energy in the wide and central areas.

A switch to Merseyside would offer top-flight football and the fresh challenge Maeda appears to want, and his relentless work rate is exactly the kind of profile that tends to win over both Moyes and a demanding home crowd.

It reads as genuine interest rather than an advanced deal, but Everton remain a realistic contender.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are another Premier League side to have been credited with an interest.

Reports have named Forest among a group of English clubs tracking the Japan international this summer, rivalling the likes of Brentford and Fulham for his signature.

Ambitious and financially well backed after several big-money windows, they have the means to get a deal done if they choose to firm up their interest, and could offer Maeda the carrot of European nights.

For now, it sits at the admiration stage rather than anything concrete, but given their recent transfer activity, they cannot be ruled out.

Fulham

Fulham complete the list of Premier League clubs linked with Maeda, alongside Brentford and Forest, who are monitoring his situation.

Like the others, they see a proven, hard-running forward available at a reasonable fee as an appealing option, and have a recent habit of shopping in overlooked markets for value.

Beyond the Premier League, clubs in Turkey - with Fenerbahce having tested Celtic's resolve with a rejected offer in the past and Trabzonspor also credited with interest - and the Saudi Pro League have been floated as possible outsiders.

Those windows stay open later than England's, so interest from that direction could yet resurface even if a summer move to the Premier League fails to materialise.

A return to Japan, for now, looks unlikely, with all the serious noise pointing towards a step up in Europe.
