Grand National 2026 - The Must-Know Stats Before You Bet

April 5, 2026 at 8:40 pm GMT+1

The Grand National is the hardest race in the world to predict, but that doesn't mean the data is useless.

Two decades of winners tell a very clear story about what it takes to win at Aintree, and several horses in this year's field fit the profile better than the market suggests.

Here's what you actually need to know before you place your bet.

Horses Age

This is the single most reliable filter - eight of the last ten Grand National winners were aged 8 or 9.

The average winning age over the last decade is 8.5 years - significantly younger than a generation ago, when double-figure veterans dominated.

The modern Aintree fences reward athletic, prime-of-life jumpers over battle-hardened survivors.

No winner aged 12 or older has crossed the line first since Amberleigh House in 2004. Noble Yeats' victory as a 7-year-old in 2022 was the first at that age since 1940.

The sweet spot is firmly 8 or 9.

Weight

Weight is where the market often misleads punters.

Nine of the last eleven winners carried between 10st 5lb and 11st 8lb, and only four winners in the last decade shouldered more than 10st 13lb - and three of those were exceptional horses - Tiger Roll, I Am Maximus, and Nick Rockett.

The key red flag - no top-weight has won since Red Rum in 1974 - that's over fifty years of failure at the head of the weights.

I Am Maximus heads the 2026 market at 8/1 but carries 11st 12lb - the maximum permitted weight and a stat that every punter should take note of.

Favourites

Back the favourite at your peril.

In 71 post-war runnings, the market leader has won just 12 times - roughly 17%, compared to a 35% strike rate for favourites across racing as a whole.

The favourite has failed even to complete the course in 37 Grand Nationals.

That said, recent trends offer a slight caveat - three of the last seven winners were sent off favourite.

But seven of the last eleven winners started at 11/1 or bigger - including Nick Rockett at 33/1 last year and Noble Yeats at 50/1 in 2022.

The data points firmly towards the 10/1 to 25/1 range as the statistical sweet spot for finding the winner.

Irish-Trained Horses

Ireland's dominance is overwhelming.

Six of the last seven Grand National winners were trained across the Irish Sea, with Lucinda Russell's Corach Rambler (2023) the lone British-trained exception.

In 2025, Willie Mullins saddled the first three home. In 2024, Irish horses filled the first four places.

Mullins runs up to nine horses in 2026 - including I Am Maximus, Grangeclare West, and Nick Rockett.

He's already won three Grand Nationals and is chasing the all-time record of four.

His Bobbyjo Chase prep race has now produced the last two Grand National winners - I Am Maximus in 2024 and Nick Rockett in 2025.

Grangeclare West won the 2026 renewal - can he follow it up with Aintree success?

Headgear

One of the most overlooked stats - fourteen of the last fifteen winners ran in no headgear whatsoever.

Of 136 horses wearing blinkers, visors, or cheekpieces in that same 15-year sample, just one won - a strike rate of 0.7%.

Check the declarations. If your pick is wearing headgear, the data says walk away.

And 2026?

The composite winner profile - 8 or 9 years old, 10st 5lb to 11st 8lb, rated 146–160, odds of 10/1 to 25/1, no headgear, Irish-trained, proven 3m+ winning form - points most cleanly to Grangeclare West as the horse to be on.

Willie Mullins' runner ticks virtually every box. He's Irish-trained, finished third in last year's race, and most importantly won the 2026 Bobbyjo Chase - the prep race that has now produced back-to-back Grand National winners in I Am Maximus and Nick Rockett.

That is not a coincidence the stats will allow you to ignore.

At 10/1 he sits perfectly within the historically favoured odds range, and his weight of 11st 10lb - while towards the top of the sweet spot - is one he has proven he can carry.

In contrast, the stats suggest the winner won't be I Am Maximus. They rarely lie.
