Juddmonte International 2026: What Do the Trends Say?
The Juddmonte International is one of the biggest puzzles of the Flat season, but Wednesday's £1.5m renewal at York looks more straightforward than most.
With nine runners set to line up, here at Free Bets, we take a closer look at the key stats and trends to find out which contenders boast the strongest historical profiles.
The Trends Say: Trust the Favourite
The betting trends from recent Juddmonte Internationals are pretty clear.
Market leaders have dominated the past decade, with around 91% of winners coming from the top three in the betting.
This is rarely a race where outsiders spring a surprise, with 11 of the last 12 winners already boasting a Group 1 victory and 10 of those 12 rated at 120 or higher.
Age also points towards experience, with around 64% of recent winners aged four or five, although a high-class three-year-old can still come out on top when receiving weight.
York experience isn't essential, with many previous winners making their first appearance at the track, but proven form around the 10-11f distance is common.
Ombudsman Fits Every Box
Ombudsman arrives as the reigning champion and current favourite with UK betting sites, with the John and Thady Gosden-trained five-year-old unbeaten in three starts this season.
His latest success came in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he stormed home by four lengths to record a career-best effort and earn a Timeform rating of 134.
That makes him the highest-rated European horse since Baaeed, while he also has the obvious advantage of having already won this race over course and distance.
Stablemate Devil's Advocate is set to provide the pace, which should play into Ombudsman's hands given his preference for being delivered late.
It's difficult to find a trend working against him: he has the Group 1 class, the rating, the market position, recent form and proven York credentials.
Timeform's David Cleary described him as "the clear form pick", and the figures certainly back up that assessment.
The One Real Threat
There is one notable trend standing in Ombudsman's way - no horse has won the Juddmonte International in successive years since Halling achieved the feat in 1995 and 1996.
That is hardly enough on its own to oppose him, particularly with Constitution River providing the obvious alternative.
Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old is unbeaten this season after victories in the French Derby and Eclipse.
In addition, his 7lb weight-for-age allowance gives him a useful advantage over the older horses.
Ryan Moore has spoken highly of the colt, and connections believe there is still improvement to come.
The Eclipse form wasn't the strongest renewal, however, so Constitution River still has something to prove against an established performer of Ombudsman's level.
He is clearly the one most capable of breaking the trend, but the reigning champion has stronger numbers.
The Each-Way Play
For punters looking beyond the leading pair, Item makes plenty of appeal. Andrew Balding's three-year-old is unbeaten over York's course and distance after winning both the Dante and York Stakes, while he also receives the 7lb three-year-old allowance.
He has yet to prove himself at Group 1 level, but his York record is difficult to ignore, and the expected strong pace should play to his strengths.
He looks the most interesting option for those looking beyond the two at the head of the market.
Verdict
The trends point strongly towards Ombudsman, who ticks almost every important box for this race: elite form, a high rating, market favouritism, recent success and proven course-and-distance ability.
Constitution River is the obvious danger, but with favourites having won nine of the last 10 renewals, the historical data strongly supports the defending champion.
