Scottish League Cup

The Scottish League Cup quarter finals took place over the weekend, and there are now just four teams remaining in the competition.

Here at Free Bets, our expert for all things North of the border is Kai Watson, and he's got his recap of the weekend below.

Kilmarnock v St Mirren - Friday

This weekend saw the Scottish League Cup Quarter Finals take place starting on Friday night at Rugby Park.

This was a cracker under the lights to start the weekend off, Mikael Mandron scored the first goal of the game and it was a beautiful goal, he controlled a long ball from Jayden Richardson, flicked it over the defenders head with his right then took another touch with his left before firing a left-footed striker under the goalkeeper.

Killie equalised before half-time though as a lovely Dominic Thompson free-kick was powered in off of the head of Robbie Deas. St. Mirren’s second was another straight from the top drawer, a Baccus cross was nodded out only as far as Richardson who controlled it on his chest and unleashed a brilliant volley into the roof of the net!

Then on the 84th minute Marley Watkins snuck in on Richard King’s blindside and the St. Mirren defender attempted to clear the ball but fouled the striker instead to give away a penalty with little time left on the clock.

Bruce Anderson stepped up and smashed it into the net, sending Shamal George the wrong way to take the game to extra-time.

Not much happened in the extra 30 minutes and the game went to penalties. The first seven were all converted, putting St. Mirren 4-3 up, Kyle Magennis stepped up and Shamal George made a big save then Malik Dijksteel stepped up with a chance to win it and slotted it into the corner to help St. Mirren progress.

A best price of 8/1 on our grid with three brands, including Parimatch, who offer new players £30 in free bets when claiming the Parimatch sign up offer.

Aberdeen v Motherwell - Saturday

The second match of the round was at Pittodrie as Aberdeen took on Motherwell with both sides desperate for a win. In a whirlwind first half Tawanda Maswanhise smashed the ball off the post then Said could only hammer the rebound over the bar. Aouchiche also cleared a Stamatelopoulos header off the line shortly after.

Then Aberdeen’s best chance of the half fell to Matt Knoester around six yards out and he smashed a weak foot shot off of the bar after a scramble in the box from a free-kick.

Not long before half-time Stamatelopoulos broke away down Motherwell’s right and cut it back to Charles-Cook but Mitov made himself big and pulled off a terrific save to keep it 0-0 at half-time.

The breakthrough came on the 63rd minute when Motherwell won the ball back and it worked out to Longelo on the left who laid it back for Charles-Cook who cut across the ball perfectly and it went in off of the post from the edge of the box, leaving Mitov with no chance.

The away side had the best of the chances but Aberdeen’s last saw a flicked Nicky Devlin header from a corner smash off of the underside of the bar but that was the last of the action and Motherwell went through 1-0.

Despite a win this week, UK betting sites still don't fancy the chances of Motherwell in this competition, they're rank outsiders of the four remaining clubs.

Rangers v Hibernian - Saturday

Rangers vs Hibs at Ibrox was next and there were protests both before the game and in the 10th minute when balls were thrown onto the pitch and play had to be stopped.

It looked like things would get even worse as a long ball over the Rangers defence was latched on to by Martin Boyle who tucked it away despite Butland getting a hand to it but after a VAR check it was disallowed for a handball.

Just before half-time though, Rangers took the lead through fan-favourite Nico Raskin via a James Tavernier corner that the Belgian international nodded in at the front post, a goal he’s starting to make a habit of!

Then the second came in first-half injury time when a clipped ball found Mikey Moore on the right and his cross deflected off of Rocky Bushiri straight into the path of Bojan Miovski who placed it in for his first Rangers goal.

Hibs didn’t offer much in the second-half but Rangers hit the bar through a brilliant Djeidi Gassama striker, Miovski had a shot cleared off the line by Grant Hanley then a goal disallowed for offside.

Big money signing Youssef Chermiti was then played through on goal just before the end but he couldn’t convert his one on one chance with Sallinger making a good save with his feet and it ended 2-0.

Bet365 are the standout best price on our grid if you think Russell Martin can guide Rangers to this trophy. For those joining this brand, the bet365 sign up offer gives £30 in free bets to new players who qualify when signing up.

Partick v Celtic - Sunday

The last Quarter Final was at Firhill as Partick hosted holders Celtic. The Championship held out for 25 minutes before a brilliant clipped cross from Benjamin Nygren found Yang at the backpost for an easy finish.

Then just two minutes later, a short corner from Tounekti to Nygren and the latter crossed it in for Scales to power a header in to make it 2-0 before the half hour mark.

Tounetki then scored almost immediately after half-time after a lovely one two with Iheanacho, Partick then gave the ball away in the 79th minute and substitute Luke McCowan drove forward and slotted in Celtic’s fourth and final goal of the game.

It wouldn't be football betting in Scotland without Celtic and Rangers heading the markets, and here is Celtic, clear favourites to lift this trophy with all brands.
