The Winners 🏆

Bosnia & Herzegovina

The story of the night. Bosnia knocked out ten-man Italy on penalties - winning 4-1 from the spot after the sides drew 1-1 after extra time - to book only their second World Cup appearance ever.

Moise Kean put the Azzurri ahead early with a curling finish from the edge of the box, and Italy looked in control.

Then came the moment that changed everything - Alessandro Bastoni's desperate lunge on Amar Memic in the 41st minute earned a straight red card, leaving Gattuso's side with ten men for the rest of the match - including 80 minutes of football still to play.

Veteran captain Edin Dzeko forced extra time with a header in the 79th minute, and Donnarumma - outstanding throughout with nine saves across 120 minutes - couldn't keep Italy alive in the shootout.

They missed three penalties, Bosnia scored all four - it wasn't close.

Zeljko Barbarez's side now head to the USA, Mexico, and Canada as one of the tournament's great stories. They join Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar in Group B.

Sweden

Viktor Gyokeres has done it again. The Arsenal striker, who hit a hat-trick against Ukraine in the semi-finals, came up with an 88th-minute winner to send Sweden through 3-2 against Poland in Solna.

Sweden trailed, equalised, led, were pegged back to 2-2 - then, in a chaotic goalmouth scramble with two minutes left, Gyokeres reacted fastest to smash home and seal it. It was his only shot of the game, but it was all he needed.

Graham Potter's side were without Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, had failed to win a single group-stage qualifier, and were given very little chance heading into these playoffs.

None of it mattered. Sweden now head to the World Cup in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.

For Robert Lewandowski and Poland, this one will sting. He may never get another chance.

Turkey

Twenty-four years. That's how long Turkey have waited to return to the World Cup - their last appearance was a famous third-place finish in Korea & Japan in 2002, but that drought is finally over.

Kerem Akturkoglu's second-half strike was the difference in a tight, tense 1-0 win against a battling Kosovo side in Pristina.

Ugurcan Cakır was outstanding in the Turkish goal, making a crucial stop from Asllani that could have changed the game entirely.

Vincenzo Montella held his nerve, made the right substitutions, and celebrated by getting drenched in water by his players.

Kosovo gave absolutely everything - in only their third qualifying campaign since joining UEFA - but Turkey were just too strong.

They head to Group D with co-hosts the United States, Paraguay, and Australia.

Czech Republic

Czechia's first World Cup since 2006, sealed on penalties in a wild game in Prague.

They drew 2-2 with Denmark after extra time before winning the shootout 3-1, with the Danes missing three of their four kicks.

Pavel Sulc had them ahead inside three minutes with a stunning volley, but Denmark fought back to level through Joachim Andersen.

The Czech's then went ahead again in extra time through Ladislav Krejci, only for substitute Kasper Hogh to equalise with his first international goal.

Then, penalties - and goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who had already saved twice from the spot against the Republic of Ireland in the semi-final, did it again.

The Czech's are in Group A with hosts Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea.

The Losers 💔

Italy

History of the bad kind for Italy.

Italy have now missed three consecutive World Cups, becoming the first former winners in the history of the tournament to do so.

An entire generation of Italian football fans under 15 has never watched the Azzurri at a World Cup - Gattuso was devastated, the whole country is devastated.

There are no easy answers for the Azzurri.

Denmark

The Danes dominated large parts of the match, created chances, and deserved more - but Rasmus Hojlund hit the bar, Anders Dreyer had his effort saved, and Mathias Jensen fired over, to end their World Cup dream.

Their failure to defeat Belarus at home back in November during qualifying will haunt Denmark for a long time.

Poland

Robert Lewandowski's last realistic shot at another World Cup is gone.

Poland were the better side for long periods on Tuesday, before Gyokeres' late winner in Solna broke their hearts.

So that's it - Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sweden, Turkey, and Czechia all join the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, which gets underway on June 11.
