World Cup 2026 Qualifying: Winners & Losers From A Dramatic Night Of Play-Off Football

Sixteen nations entered Thursday night's World Cup 2026 European play-off semi-finals - by Friday morning, only eight remained in the hunt for a place in North America.
It was a dramatic night across Europe, and the betting sites have already shifted their odds accordingly - here's the full breakdown, plus what the odds are telling us ahead of Tuesday's finals.

The Winners 🏆
Sweden
The standout result of the night by some distance saw Viktor Gyokeres produce a sensational hat-trick to fire Sweden to a 3-1 win over Ukraine in Valencia, dragging Graham Potter's side into the Path B final.
Sweden had been winless in six and were without key names, but Gyokeres struck inside six minutes, added a second after the break and sealed it from the spot before a late Ukraine consolation.
It marked Potter's first win in charge and completely flipped the betting outlook, with Sweden now heading into Tuesday's clash with Poland in Solna for a place in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.
Italy
Italy did what Italy always do in play-offs - get the job done.
A controlled 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in Bergamo, with Tonali and Kean on target, saw Gattuso's side deliver a composed, professional performance under pressure.
They now face Bosnia in the Path A final after their shock penalty win over Wales, with Italy 1/2 favourites to qualify in Zenica.
Bosnia have the home crowd and nothing to lose at 11/2, but Italy's experience and quality should prove decisive.
Kosovo
The story of the night saw Kosovo produce a stunning 4-3 win over Slovakia in Bratislava, coming from behind twice before Hajrizi fired home the decisive goal in a remarkable seven-goal thriller — the biggest result in their short history.
They now host Turkey on Tuesday for a place in Group D, and while the visitors are 4/11 favourites, their defensive issues keep this interesting.
With momentum and a passionate home crowd behind them, Kosovo look far more competitive than the odds suggest.
Denmark
The most convincing winners of the night were Denmark, who cruised past North Macedonia 4-0 in Copenhagen with a dominant second-half display, Isaksen scoring twice alongside goals from Damsgaard and Eriksen.
It was a statement performance that underlined their quality heading into the final.
They now face Czechia in Prague on Tuesday, who had a far more nervy route through - drawing 2-2 with the Republic of Ireland before edging through 4-3 on penalties.
The Losers 💔
Ukraine
They dominated the first half with 73% possession, held the stronger head-to-head record, and went in as clear favourites - but none of it mattered once Gyokeres took over.
Ukraine's World Cup hopes are over, and with Serhiy Rebrov's contract expiring in two months and no renewal in sight, this could well be the end of his tenure.
Wales
Wales went in as odds-on favourites to reach the Path A final and looked in control after taking the lead, but a late header from 39-year-old Edin Dzeko forced extra time and turned the tie on its head.
Bosnia held their nerve to win 4-2 on penalties, sending Wales out and extending their wait for a first World Cup appearance since 1958.
Romania
Romania had scored in seven of their eight qualifiers and arrived in strong form, but were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Turkey in a tight semi-final.
Kadioglu's second-half strike - superbly assisted by Guler - proved decisive, leaving Romania to exit with credit but no reward after an impressive campaign.
Republic of Ireland
Ireland were brilliant in qualifying, winning three straight games before the play-offs while outscoring opponents 6-2, and they deserved better than what happened in Prague.
They drew 2-2 with the Czechs having led 2-0 before going out 4-3 on penalties - cruel and hard to take.
Ireland's qualifying form suggested they were a team ready for a major tournament - they just never got there.
World Cup 2026 Play-Off Finals
All four finals kick off at 7:45pm on Tuesday, 31 March, with four World Cup places on the line.
The four winners will join the 12 European nations already qualified - Austria, Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland - at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June.
