Alan Kelly's Tips - Monday, October 13th
With decent ground almost guaranteed, Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday looks like being a cracker, although connections of those horses hoping for soft conditions are likely to be disappointed.
We start the week with flat cards at Musselburgh, Yarmouth and Kempton (All-Weather) together with Hereford’s jumps card. The fifth meeting is that of Roscommon in Ireland.
3:12pm Hereford - Boys Of Wexford (Each-Way)
Henrietta Knight’s course and distance winner of six months ago, the seven-year-old Jimmyjeroo, is probably the one to beat in this pretty desperate Class 5 handicap chase. Brendan Powell’s mount has been well beaten in five subsequent attempts but was far from disgraced on his most recent start when fourth of 10 at Market Rasen a couple of weeks ago.
Tim Vaughan’s Designer Destiny returns to action under rules for the first time in two years, the 11-year-old mare victorious in three point-to-points in the meantime but beaten on her last two outings at short prices. Archie Watson’s top weight Clearisthewater is interesting on his chasing debut after finishing a well-beaten second over hurdles in Sweden last month. However, the Henry Oliver stable has recorded three wins from their last 5 runners as I write, two at big prices, in which case it could be worth taking a chance on a return to form for the trainer’s BOYS OF WEXFORD (Each-Way), the mount of Lee Edwards.
The eight-year-old won a handicap chase at Fontwell last November off today’s mark of 78 before finishing a close third over today’s course and distance the following month. While Boys Of Wexford has been slow to recapture that level of form so far this year, the gelding almost certainly needed his run at Stratford last month (first for 148 days), and in a race that will take very little winning, gets the vote.
Recommendation: Boys Of Wexford (Each-Way) - 12/1 with bet365 (3 places)
3:42pm Hereford - Jungle Wood (Nap)
Backed as if defeat was out of the question on his last two starts following wind surgery, it would be no surprise to see bottom weight Getaway With You finally come good at the 23rd attempt over hurdles, the ex Billy Aprahamian-trained son of Getaway (now in the care of the Killahena/McPherson stable) a seriously well-handicapped horse based on his length defeat at the hands of Dan Skelton’s 128-rated Mr Hope Street at Uttoxeter last May.
I will be keeping a careful betting-eye regarding the mount of 7lb claimer Oscar Palmer and may well have a saver on the seven-year-old gelding if the market speaks in his favour once again. However, champion jockey Sean Bowen takes over on the Sara Bradstock-trained JUNGLE WOOD (Nap) for the first time, the six-year-old partnered by 7lb claiming amateur Miss Lily Bradstock in all four of his races in 2025.
A game winner at Worcester during the summer, Jungle Wood put up another solid effort when 3rd of 12 at Uttoxeter last month. On just his 7th start over hurdles, the selection has more improvement to come and can take this novices’ limited handicap off a mark of 89.
Recommendation: Jungle Wood (Nap) - 5/2 with bet365
3:52pm Musselburgh - Jannas Journey
Gemma Tutty’s Thelma’s Angel heads the weights for this £25k Class 3 fillies' handicap. The daughter of Dark Angel has not been seen on turf (7th at Chelmsford three months ago) since finishing 12th in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot and any market confidence in Rowan Scott’s mount should be noted. However, I think the two to concentrate on in an effort to find the winner of this 7f contest are Grant Tuer’s Bellarchi and Jim Goldie’s JANNAS JOURNEY, with preference for the latter.
Bellarchi was narrowly beaten in a similar race to this at Thirsk last month, a race in which Jannas Journey could only manage to finish 6th and due to meet Oliver Stammers’ mount on 9lb worse terms. Strictly speaking, Bellarchi should confirm that form, but after setting a scorching pace up front it was no surprise that Jannas Journey had nothing left to give when headed 2 out.
After winning off a mark of 47 at Hamilton during the summer, Cam Hardie’s mount went on to record another six victories and is now rated 85. Sixth in a Class 2 handicap at York on Friday, despite not getting the clearest of runs, this tough daughter of Sioux Nation may not be finished just yet and can take her winning record for the year to 8 from 15.
Recommendation: Jannas Journey - 7/2 with bet365
