Alan Kelly's Tips - Tuesday, 14 July
There is a strong British and Irish challenge for Longchamp's Group 1 Cygames Grand Prix de Paris on Tuesday evening, headed by Betfred Derby runner-up Maltese Cross. William Haggas's charge may have most to fear from one of the three French-trained runners, possibly Francis-Henri Graffard's unbeaten Varandir, who takes a big step-up in class. A race to watch with a view to the future, in particular the 2026 Arc.
The British Flat action comes from the modest cards at Beverley, Ffos Las and Leicester, all of which are expected to take place on ground described as a mixture of good and good to firm.
2:47pm Beverley - What A Tahoo
Second, third, fourth and fifth respectively over today's course and distance last month, Jack Rabbit Slims, Power Of Chora, Dabbling and Sparkling Wine take each other on once again in this Class 6 handicap run over the minimum trip. I expect the narrow runner-up on that occasion, Jack Rabbit Slims, to confirm that form with talented apprentice Jack Dickson well worth his current claim of 7lb.
The Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood-trained Aclaim gelding may have to settle for second place once again, however, the one to beat being WHAT A TAHOO from the Richard & Peter Fahey stable. Cam Hardie's mount opened her account on turf at the third attempt when running out a comfortable winner at Ripon last month.
Off today's revised mark of 51, What A Tahoo looked an unlucky loser at Musselburgh 13 days later when beaten just over three lengths in fifth place after being denied a clear run repeatedly in the closing stages. There is a lot more to come from the daughter of Cotai Glory, who is expected to take plenty of beating.
Recommendation: What A Tahoo - 3/1 with bet365
2:54pm Leicester - Betelgeuse
After being campaigned over distances ranging from 1m 6f to an extended 2m, I think the drop down to today's trip of 1m 4f will suit the Sean Woods-trained BETELGEUSE in a race where recent form is thin on the ground.
Despite finishing last of three on his penultimate start at Yarmouth last month, the Almanzor gelding wasn't beaten that far after making the running until headed just over a furlong out. Runner-up to James Owen's favourite Prince Quattro at Newmarket 8 days later, the four-year-old once again dictated matters until headed by the winner close home over that trip of 2m.
A 9 length winner on Southwell's all-weather surface last October, Sean Levey's mount has his best chance yet of opening his account on turf, although any support for Owen Burrows' Golden Horn filly Joanna Hiffernan should be noted on her handicap debut.
Recommendation: Betelgeuse - 5/4 with bet365
3:48pm Beverley - Bradbury (Nap)
Watching the Ed Bethell-trained Bradbury in the closing stages of his races isn't easy viewing for his supporters, as the Ghaiyyath gelding's tail starts flashing like a Belisha beacon when put under pressure. I don't think there is anything wrong with the three-year-old's attitude however, as Kevin Stott's mount attempts to record a hat-trick of wins following victories at Leicester and Wetherby last month.
Prior to those successes, BRADBURY (Nap) had been narrowly beaten over today's course and distance by an in-form horse in Vietnorm. The impression is that the selection keeps a little bit back for himself at the end of his races, which makes it difficult for the handicapper to get the horse's measure.
Raised just 4lb for those two victories, I think Bradbury is more than capable of continuing his successful run in a race which should take little winning. Of the two Tim Easterby contenders, Kitsune Power is well exposed but was a close second here back in May off a 2lb lower mark, while Ed Dunlop's handicap debutante Melting Snow is worth a look in the betting.
Recommendation: Bradbury (Nap) - 7/4 with bet365
Ante-Post: Coral Golden Mile (Goodwood, 31 July) - Tribal Chief (Each-Way)
Having selected the David Menuisier-trained Tribal Chief for Saturday's valuable Coral Challenge at Sandown, the race was pretty much over for Saffie Osborne's mount as the stalls opened, the five-year-old losing in the region of 8 lengths to his rivals in a race where it was almost impossible to win from such a position.
A fast finishing sixth, beaten three lengths, the son of Sioux Nation nevertheless ran a cracking trial for Goodwood's Coral Golden Mile later this month. Currently standing at number 46 for the £175k handicap on the Friday of the five-day festival, and with a maximum field of 20, the five-year-old will need a few to come out in order to make the cut.
Sixth in last year's race off a 2lb lower mark when beaten three lengths after being slowly away once again as a strongly-fancied 11/2 chance, TRIBAL CHIEF (Each-Way) will need to get his act together as the stalls open on the Sussex Downs, but following excellent efforts in both the Lincoln and Victoria Cup this season, the ante-post selection has a big handicap within him at some point.
Recommendation: Tribal Chief (Each-Way) - 16/1 with Betfred & Paddy Power (¼ odds, 1-2-3-4)
