Latest Profit & Loss Figures

An excellent week ending Sunday, 17 May with a profit of £21.78 to a £1 level stake.

Tuesday’s three selections all obliged for a 40/1 treble, while we had winners 6/4, 5/4, 12/1 and 4/1 at York’s Dante meeting along with several double-figure places.

The narrow defeat of Albert Einstein (tipped at 3/1) on Saturday prevented a run of five winning naps.

  • P/L for the week ending Sunday, 17 May: +£21.78
  • P/L for the year 2026 to date: +£112.92
  • P/L for the year 2025: +£22.38
  • P/L for the year 2024: +£200.42
  • P/L since 1st September 2022: +£613.58

Alan Kelly's Tips - Friday, 22 May

While soft ground is currently the case for the meetings at Goodwood and Haydock Park on Friday afternoon, I expect conditions to improve with warm temperatures and little rain forecast over the next few days.

2:55pm Haydock - Sky Majesty

An excellent turnout of 17 runners for the Listed Cecil Frail Stakes, the 6f contest run for the first time in 1999. Kevin Ryan’s Lady Youmzain is unbeaten on both of her starts to date but takes a big step-up in class today. Karl Burke’s Half Sovereign drops down in trip after weakening to finish a well beaten 12th in the French 1000 Guineas 12 days ago; the daughter of Ten Sovereigns may well turn out to be better suited by sprint distances.

Kevin Ryan’s Magic Basma has some decent form to her name over today’s trip and is closely matched with George Boughey’s Rosy Affair, who was last seen beating all bar Flora Of Bermuda in Newmarket’s Listed Chaloner Stakes at the Guineas meeting. On the form of that race, Billy Loughnane’s mount is probably the one to beat, although slight preference is for the horse who finished sixth on that occasion, the William Haggas-trained SKY MAJESTY.

Haggas won this race in 2022 with Sense Of Duty and he looks to have a very similar type in this daughter of Blue Point. Five from 9 on turf, Tom Marquand’s mount will be more at home on today’s easier ground and is expected to improve plenty for that first outing in 7 months. After stumbling at the start, Sky Majesty did well to dead-heat for 10th place in Longchamp’s Prix De L’Abbaye on her final start of last season over the minimum trip and looks like a Group-class filly in the making.

Recommendation: Sky Majesty - 9/4 with bet365

4:17pm Goodwood - Enfjaar (Each-Way)

An excellent renewal of this mile and a quarter Listed Festival Stakes in which a case can be made for several of the 9 contenders. Karl Burke has a couple of strings to his bow in last season’s Cambridgeshire winner Boiling Point and Ice Max, the latter last seen finishing a creditable third behind dual Derby winner Lambourn in Chester’s Group 2 Huxley Stakes earlier in the month.

Julie Camacho’s Naqeeb clearly likes it here, runner-up under a big weight in last season Chesterfield Cup at the Glorious meeting, Ryan Sexton’s mount ended the season with a game victory in the Listed Foundation Stakes over course and distance before making a promising reappearance behind Jonquil at Ascot three weeks ago.

Richard Hannon’s Haatem is a class act at his best, the son of Phoenix Of Spain beaten only a head in the 2024 Irish 2000 Guineas by Rosallion, Sean Levey’s mount’s latest victory coming in last season’s Wolferton Stakes at the royal meeting. A disappointing 6th of 7 in Haydock’s Group 3 Lancaster Stakes on his most recent start back in August, Haatem may prove the one to beat if straight enough on his first start for over nine months.

However, with the Roger Varian stable in cracking form at the moment, the vote goes to the six-year-old ENFJAAR (Each-Way), the mount of  jockey Ray Dawson. Just over a length behind Haatem at Royal Ascot last June, despite not enjoying the best of runs, the Lope De Vega gelding enjoys a bit of cut in the ground, as when winning York’s John Smith’s Cup two years ago, before going down narrowly under 9st 12lb in the Chesterfield Cup over today’s course and distance 17 days later.

Recommendations: Enfjaar (Each-Way) - 9/2 with bet365 (3 places)

5:27pm Goodwood - Seven Questions

Having tipped the Robert Cowell-trained SEVEN QUESTIONS for a sprint handicap at Chester recently, I thought the five-year-old ran well in finishing a close fourth, one place in front of fellow rival Cannon’s House and set to meet Mick & David Easterby’s charge on 4lb better terms today.

Now down to a mark of just 87, the Kodiac gelding is beginning to look like a very well handicapped horse at the moment. Beaten less than six lengths off a mark of 100 in last year’s Stewards’ Cup, the five-year-old will have the services of jockey Jamie Spencer for the first time and a reproduction of his first run of the season when third of 13 at Pontefract would make the selection hard to beat off today’s 5lb lower mark.

Seven Question’s stablemate Fidelius is one of several potential dangers, along with course specialist Dream Composer and Nogo’s Dream from the Richard Hughes’ stable.

Recommendation: Seven Questions - 9/2 with bet365

7:52pm Pontefract - Sea Of Kings (Nap)

Jedd O’Keeffe’s consistent four-year-old Trojan Soldier is on a hat-trick following recent wins at Southwell and Ripon, the latest coming at the “Garden Racecourse” last week courtesy of a hard-fought victory over previous winner Scottish Dancer and fellow rival Vaguely Royale from the Ian William stable.

Today’s 2m 1f trip should be no problem for the mount of talented 5lb claimer Jack Nicholls. While the Ulysses gelding looks sure to run another decent race, I prefer the chances of Harry Eustace’ top weight SEA OF KINGS (Nap) and jockey Kaiya Fraser.

Still a maiden after six starts to date, the son of Sea The Stars has been competing in much better company than any of his rivals, in particular when finishing fourth 4th of 12 in York’s Sky Bet Melrose (Heritage Handicap) at York’s Ebor meeting on his final outing of last year. The winner of that valuable contest, Tarriance, is now rated 105.

Gelded towards the end of last year, Sea Of Kings is sure to come on for his first start in eight months when runner-up in a mile and a half handicap at Doncaster last month. With the aid of cheekpieces for the first time on his first try at this kind of trip, I expect the Wathnan-owned gelding to outclass his six rivals before attempting something a little more ambitious.

Recommendation: Sea Of Kings (Nap) - 11/10 with bet365
