How to Bet on League One

League One provides plenty of betting angles throughout the season, whether you're interested in the promotion battle, relegation scrap, individual matches or live betting.

If you're new to League One betting, follow these simple steps:

  1. Select a market – choose from match result, goals, BTTS, player markets or season-long options such as promotion, relegation and the title.
  2. Shop around for odds – compare prices from different betting sites before placing your wager, as even small differences can make a difference to your potential return.
  3. Decide your stake – work out how much you're prepared to risk and never bet more than you can afford to lose.
  4. Make your selection – place a single bet or combine picks from different fixtures in an accumulator. You can also use Bet Builders to combine several markets from one match.
  5. Double-check your bet – review the selection, odds, stake and potential winnings on your bet slip before confirming.

Live betting gives you the chance to back League One matches once they are underway, with markets and prices changing as the game develops.

Goals, cards, substitutions and momentum can all cause odds to move quickly, so check the latest price and market terms before placing an in-play bet.

League One Betting Markets Explained

League One betting goes beyond picking match winners, with a mix of matchday markets and season-long options covering the promotion race, play-offs and battle to avoid relegation.

Here are some of the most popular markets available from UK betting sites:

  • Match Result (1X2) – Choose the home win, draw or away win, with the result settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
  • Double Chance – Select two possible outcomes from the three available, such as a home win or draw.
  • Both Teams to Score (BTTS) – Predict whether both sides will score at least once during the match.
  • Over/Under Goals – Back the total goals to finish above or below a bookmaker's line, such as 2.5 goals.
  • Correct Score – Predict the exact result, such as 2-1 or 1-1, with bigger odds available for less likely scorelines.
  • Anytime Goalscorer – Pick a player to score at any stage of the match.
  • Draw No Bet – Back a team to win, with your stake returned if the fixture ends in a draw.
  • Handicap – Give one side a virtual head start or deficit to create a more balanced betting line.
  • Bet Builder – Combine multiple selections from the same League One fixture into a single bet.
  • Accumulator (Acca) – Link selections from several matches together for a potentially bigger return, with every leg needing to win.
  • Promotion Markets – Bet on clubs to win automatic promotion, finish in a play-off position or secure promotion through the play-offs.
  • Relegation Markets – Pick the teams you think will finish in the bottom four and drop into League Two.
  • Outright Markets – Season-long options include the League One winner, promotion, relegation and top goalscorer markets.

League One Format & Key Dates

The EFL League One is made up of 24 clubs, with every team playing 46 league matches, facing each opponent once at home and once away.

Three points are awarded for a victory, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If teams finish level on points, goal difference is used first to separate them, followed by goals scored.

Promotion & Relegation

The top two League One sides are promoted automatically to the Championship, while teams finishing third to sixth compete in the play-offs for the final promotion place. The bottom four clubs are relegated to League Two and replaced by four promoted teams.

Play-Offs

The clubs finishing between third and sixth enter the League One play-offs, with the semi-finals followed by a one-off final at Wembley. The winner joins the top two in the Championship for the following season.

With four promotion and relegation places up for grabs, the battle at both ends of the table can make for a competitive betting market throughout the season.

League One FAQs

How does promotion from League One work?
The top two clubs are automatically promoted to the Championship. The teams finishing 3rd to 6th enter the play-offs, and the play-off final winner takes the third promotion place - so three clubs go up each season.
How many teams are promoted from League One?
Three: the champions and runners-up go up automatically, and a third is decided by the play-offs between the clubs finishing 3rd to 6th.
How many teams are relegated from League One?
The bottom four clubs are relegated to League Two - one more than the three that drop out of the Championship, which makes the League One relegation battle especially tight.
What are the League One play-offs?
The clubs finishing 3rd to 6th play two-legged semi-finals, and the winners meet in a one-off final at Wembley. The winner is promoted to the Championship.
What's the difference between the League One winner and promotion markets?
The winner market is settled on the club that finishes top of League One, while the promotion market covers any team that earns a place in the Championship - the top two automatically or the play-off winner. As the markets cover different outcomes, the odds can vary, so it's worth comparing both before placing your bet.
What betting markets are available on League One?
The key betting markets cover the title, promotion, relegation and top goalscorer, while individual fixtures offer plenty of options including match result, BTTS, goals and Bet Builders.
