Cheltenham Day 1 Entries: Key Takeaways
Want the headlines from the Cheltenham day 1 entries without reading the racecards? Here's the key takeaways:
- Tutti Quanti has been supplemented by Paul Nicholls for the Champion Hurdle
- Lossiemouth is in the Champion Hurdle, with her race decision to be left as late as possible
- Mighty Park, fav for the Turners, remains in the Supreme for now
- Romeo Coolio in the Arkle but race decision to be made on Saturday
- The JP McManus owned Jagwar is in the Ultima and out of the Plate
1:20pm Supreme Novices' Hurdle
The opening contest sees Old Park Star head the market for Nicky Henderson, while the Willie Mullins trained runner Mighty Park, lacking experience, is high in the betting.
He's the talking horse from Closutton, favourite for the Turners Novices' Hurdle, and a decision on his race will be made in the coming days.
2:00pm Arkle Chase
A classic Britain vs Ireland clash here, with the Nicky Henderson trained Lulamba taking on the Willie Mullins trained Kopek Des Bordes.
Both have their question marks, both are undoubtedly talented, and it promises to be a cracker. Lulamba has been favourite for the past few weeks, but today, when entries came out, Kopek Des Bordes took over at the head of the market.
2:40pm Juvenile Handicap Hurdle
A typical big field minefield, made even tougher by the lack of experience that this lot have.
It's wide open at the time of writing, 5/1 the field, and only three of them are in single figures showing just how competitive this is on paper.
3:20pm Ultima Handicap Chase
A Grand National trial perhaps? With Jagwar, Iroko and Myretown amongst the leading contenders here, it's a race that will be great on the day, and could provide clues for Aintree.
A full field is expected, and again, a very competitive betting heat.
4:00pm Champion Hurdle
The New Lion heads the market for Dan Skelton in the day 1 feature, with Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth in behind.
The latter named may not come here, that's still up in the air, and if she doesn't come, you can only imagine the favourite will harden.
4:40pm Plate Handicap Chase
Another race where we'll see a full field going to post, and the competitive nature of this contest can be seen from the latest betting odds.
Madara and Mclaurey are the only two horses in single figures, with Madara especially spoken about for this race a lot.
5:20pm National Hunt Chase
The final race on the opening day is the National Hunt Chase, now a handicap and with that, the field should be much bigger than the one we've seen over recent runnings, when this was a graded race.
Backmersackme, trained by Emmet Mullins, head the latest betting.
