John Eustace to Derby

Q: John Eustace has been announced as Derby manager this morning. Is that a move that surprised you that he'd go there from Blackburn?

Yeah, it did surprise me, despite him being from the area. He's not far from the midlands so he is closer to home, he played for Derby and scored goals for them as a midfielder.

They loved him there so I can understand why the move happened, but I'm very surprised because Blackburn have had a good season, and another good win last night.

They beat West Brom who are fighting for the playoffs. He’s leaving a team in the playoffs to join a team that is fighting relegation. It's a difficult one, but I think he will turn it around at Derby.

I think he's going with his heart, and his heart's telling him he should go to Derby - and it’s a massive football club as well by the way. They get 28,000 most weeks, even if they're in the League One as well. It's a huge football club.

You can understand why he's going. I know Blackburn fans won't be happy and it is a strange one, but I think he's got a good connection with Derby County.

As a manager, sometimes you get that vibe that if it's right to move, it's right to move. I think he's decided he wants to move on.

Q: Is it a bit risky from a personal point of view to go from that Premier League chasing side to a team that could be in League 1 next season?

Yeah, I agree with you. I think he backs himself when he looks at that squad. He would have had reassurances from the chairman and also said, ‘even if we do go down, I'll still be in charge next season to get us back promoted as soon as possible’.

I think Derby have got a chance of staying up. They've had a few good results recently, a couple of draws against decent teams.

I think they've got enough in their squad to keep them up and he wouldn't have gone there if he didn't think he could keep them up

But I know where I'd rather be, I'd rather be in the playoffs and trying to get promoted to the Premier League.

Q: I think the Blackburn fans group have already admitted they don’t blame him due to issues with the ownership etc…

Yeah, I think the situation with the ownership and having money to spend could be a big part of the decision.

I think maybe the owner at Derby might give him money to spend at the end of the season and he might have better communication with him.

I don't know about the ownership at Blackburn, so I can't really comment on it but I think if the fans have come out and said that, then they know better than us.

Next Blackburn Managers?

Q: In terms of looking at next potential Blackburn managers, do you think that's maybe something that would weigh on the mind of people that have been linked to it?

You've got to realize Blackburn's a big football club.

When I was playing, Blackburn were in the Premier League. They were a good team, they have produced some really good players and everyone would have loved to have gone to play for Blackburn Rovers.

It is a big club. It has had its ups and downs over the years, but they look like they have recruited and brought in some decent players

The striker Makhtar Gueye looks like he can score goals for fun. They have got some good players in that squad and young players as well, hungry players.

Whoever takes that job, it is a good job. There'll be loads of people wanting to take that job. They’re in the playoff position and I know come the end of the season it might be difficult because there's a lot of teams chasing you, but I'd go to Blackburn in a heartbeat.

There'd be lots of managers that are out of work at the moment will be applying for that Blackburn Rovers job, that's for sure.

Q: A guy that we spoke about a few times and you know him well - Lee Carsley is current favorite for the job…would he be a good fit?

Any job that Lee Carsley gets will be a good fit.  It's just if Lee Carsley is ready to go and take that job. He's got a great job with the England Under-21s and I think he really enjoys working with them.

So there might come a time when a job does look appealing to him. But do I think he'll go for this Blackburn Rovers job? I'm not sure. I think his job at the moment is safe with the 21s and he enjoys that.

But if they manage to get Lee Carsey, I think it'd be a great coup for Blackburn Rovers because let's be honest, he's a fantastic manager and it's only a matter of time. But I think he'd probably wait because I do think he's good enough to go on and manage in the Premier League.

I'm surprised that he hasn't been linked when the Premier League jobs become available because I think he's ready now. I think he'll wait for that opportunity but you never know. You never know.

Do you know who else is favourite to get that job?

Q: We've got Gary O'Neill as second favourite. Then David Lowe, Ryan Lowe, Rob Edwards are all on there too, and Richie Wellens

Yeah, that's a great shout. I thought Steven Gerrard might be on the list too. David Lowe is the academy manager who took charge of the team when they beat West Brom, Rob Edwards is a good shout and Ryan Lowe too after he got sacked by Preston.

I can understand Richie Wellens. He's flying at Leyton Orient at the moment, absolutely flying. So he would be one that they'd probably be interested in. But it’s Gary O'Neill for me, he's a standout candidate.

It just depends if Gaz wants to go or wait for a Premier League job.

It's not a bad job. They're in the playoffs, they've got some talented players. So there'll be a lot of managers interested in that job. It'll be interesting but Blackburn need to appoint. Well, I say that but they have an interim manager who got a great result against West Brom.

Maybe they'll bide their time and just see how Lowe gets on for the next two or three games. And if not, just keep him in for him until the summer and then make a decision.

Tottenham v Manchester United

Q: It's Spurs v Manchester United on Sunday. Two managers under quite a bit of pressure going into that game, do you think that’s fair?

What a game. I'm actually at this game on the weekend. I'm doing commentary on the radio. It's a game where you have two underachieving teams that are in the bottom half of the table.

It's a massive game for Ange Postecoglou. I think Ruben Amorim, even though they're struggling, will be given time until next season, but he needs to start winning football matches.

But for Ange going out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, means he needs to start winning league matches at the Tottenham Stadium.

He needs to start because the fans will start turning. What happens is the fans have a go at Daniel Levy, and Daniel Levy will think he has a decision to make and maybe sack the manager, even though I don't think it's the right thing.

I think you stick with it. They've got nine or 10 regular first-team players that are out.

His hands are tied behind his back at the moment.

Maybe give the man a bit of a bit of a chance and hopefully he can turn it around. But this is a massive game for Ange Postecoglou

It's a big game for both teams. Both teams should not be in the bottom half of the table. It is crazy the way the season has panned out for Man United and Tottenham. And both are still in the Europa League. And both could probably go on and have a chance of winning the Europa League.

Q: Like you said, out of both cups is the Europa League the one thing keeping Ange alive at the moment or could they or could he still lose his job if they're still in that?

I think the Europa League is keeping him in his job. And I think the amount of injuries he's got at football club is keeping him in the job. Do that to any club and take nine or eight of their first team regulars out of their squad and they would struggle.

I don't care how good your squad is or how much money you spend, you will struggle massively. And that is happening for him.

So you can feel sorry for him on that front for sure but when you look at some of the performances… when they went to Liverpool in the semi-final, just have a shot on target, go and make a tackle. It's a semi-final. Go and give something to fans to cheer about.

At the end of the day, when you put on that Tottenham shirt, it should mean a lot to you because there's a lot of people that would love to go and play for Tottenham.

I would not get rid of Ange. No chance. I'd keep him because I feel like you can't keep sacking managers and bringing a new manager in. And I think Tottenham have done that loads over the previous seasons.

Just give him a chance. And then when all of his players come back, if he doesn't deliver then yeah, maybe… you know, maybe he loses his job.

Q: And then Amorim, have you been surprised by the way he talks in his press conferences? He's quite honest and he's quite damning of the way everything is.

I'm very surprised. It's very good. Let me tell you something, he's very good at the way he speaks in front of the media, but he's at Manchester United Football Club.

Some of the things he says, I don't think he needs to be saying. He's at Man United. He needs those players on side.

He's got to deliver. This is still the biggest club in the world. Man United are the biggest club in the world. Man United should not be struggling the way they're struggling.

It's nowhere near good enough. They just about scraped through beating Leicester in the FA Cup and it should have probably been a disallowed goal so these results are nowhere near good enough. He has to start getting results because Old Trafford used to be a fortress.

I know they're away on the weekend, but people are going to Man United now and not fearing them. They go in there thinking we can go and get three points off them.

I know he needs to get rid of players before he can spend, but I think they'll have an overhaul in the summer, but they will need to stay in contention from now to the end of the season.

Birmingham v Charlton

Q: Moving on we have Birmingham at home to Charlton on Saturday. Charlton have sort of come out of nowhere in League One and all of a sudden they’re not just competing for playoffs but look like they could potentially, if they keep the run going, compete for top two.

It's been a pretty decent turnaround for Nathan Jones, who's probably expected to do that sort of job when he was brought in…

I looked at the table last night and I couldn't believe it. They are flying. They're not far behind Wrexham and Wycombe.

I don't think they'll catch Birmingham, I think Birmingham's got too much class. They are sneakily coming up on the outside and Nathan Jones has got the experience in these divisions to get promoted. So yeah, you have to watch out for Charlton. And I think Charlton fans have had it hard over the last few years staying in League One.

When I was playing Charlton, we always had good battles in the Championship. So it's probably difficult for them.

Those fans would want a promotion, and the way they're going about it at the moment, it looks like the Valley is a hard place to go and play football and they are getting results. So huge credit must go to Nathan Jones.

They could go there and cause an upset because they're in good form at the moment. But I do think Birmingham will be too strong. So I think if Charlton went there and got a point, Nathan Jones would bite your hand off for that because the way Birmingham are playing at the moment, I can't see any team getting near them.

One of the goals they scored the other night against Cambridge, that was gold, and it was unbelievable passing from a League One team.

I think Birmingham will be too strong for Charlton. But if Charlton can go there and get a point, I think it'd be a fantastic result. But as I said, that's not Chalrton’s battle. Charlton's battle is to finish ahead of Wycombe and Wrexham. They're the two teams that they're chasing down at the moment.

And they're probably, along with Birmingham, the two in-form teams at the moment in League One so it should be a fascinating game, but I wouldn't underestimate Charlton, that's for sure. Nathan Jones will hard to beat and they'll cause Birmingham a lot of problems.

Exeter

Q: Finally just a quick one on Exeter, who pushed Forrest quite close in the FA Cup the other day. An old club of yours but they’ve had a difficult recent run - good to see them have a big night?

I watched the game, and I thought they even had chances when they went down to 10 men. They were still pushing and Gary Caldwell set them up to be really difficult to play against. I thought they were brilliant.

I think they've signed a few players in the January window to give them an opportunity to kick on and when you take a team like Forest to penalties who are flying in the Premier League, no matter how many changes they make, it should give you confidence moving forward.

I know what it's like to play there. The fans will get behind you. It's a lovely family club, people in the community are good. Hopefully they can start climbing the table as i said i think Gary Caldwell now will give the players confidence and hopefully they can get back on track.

If I was one of the players, it would give me confidence for the rest of the season.

Q: I know they are five points clear, but you'd back them to stay away from that bottom four?

I'd definitely back Exeter to stay away from trouble. After watching them perform against Nottingham Forest, there are some talented players there with a lot of good youngsters. They've got a good manager.

It's just been a bad spell that they've been on recently. I think with the new additions that they brought in in January, hopefully they start climbing the table. But I don't think they'll be looking over their shoulders. They'll be rather looking up after that performance against Nottingham Forest.
