Hibernian sacked David Gray as head coach with the club ninth in the Scottish Premiership, following a fourth league defeat in six games this season after a 1-0 home loss to bottom side Kilmarnock.

Coach John Potter has taken interim charge for the visit of Aberdeen, with Hibs adding in a statement that they "will announce a new permanent head coach in due course."

Coral have now opened a market on the next permanent Hibernian boss, with Steve Evans installed as the odds-on favourite ahead of Jon Dahl Tomasson, Shaun Maloney, Scott Brown and Darren Fletcher.

Steve Evans

Steve Evans is the clear favourite with Coral, having reportedly been on Hibernian's radar since early September while Gray was still under pressure.

The 63-year-old Scot has transformed Bristol Rovers this season, guiding them to the top of League Two, and has previous Championship experience from spells at Leeds United and Rotherham United.

A return to his home country would appeal, and his experience of turning teams around quickly makes him the market's clear pick.

The jump from League Two and the cost of prising him away from Bristol Rovers are the obvious complications.

Jon Dahl Tomasson

Current second favourite Jon Dahl Tomasson has been out of work since being sacked as Sweden head coach in autumn 2025 following a poor World Cup qualifying campaign.

He has yet to take a new job, although he has remained visible as a TV pundit and joked that "my phone is always on" when asked about managerial vacancies.

The Dane's club CV includes Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, two Allsvenskan titles with Malmo FF, plus spells at Roda JC and Excelsior in the Netherlands.

Tomasson is also no stranger to Hibs, having been interviewed for the Easter Road job in 2022 before losing out to Lee Johnson, reportedly over wage demands.

His record of winning major honours abroad and previous interest in the role help explain his position near the top of the market.

Shaun Maloney

Shaun Maloney began his managerial career at Hibernian five years ago before moving on to Wigan Athletic.

He's currently assistant manager to Martin O'Neill at Celtic.

A return to Easter Road with a more experienced coaching CV behind him would carry an obvious romance, and he's known and respected within the building.

Celtic standing in his way, and one short first spell in club management being enough evidence for Hibs to back him again, are the key questions holding him back in the betting.

Scott Brown

Scott Brown left Ayr United by mutual consent in March 2026 following a poor run of results, ending a spell that began in January 2024 and included a third place Championship finish.

He has been out of management since and was recently linked with the vacant Derry City job in the League of Ireland.

The former Celtic and Scotland captain remains one of the more prominent names available in Scottish football, and made over 100 appearances for the Hibees.

However, Hibs may be cautious about another rebuild after David Gray's difficult spell, while questions remain over the circumstances behind Brown's departure from Ayr United, providing some context around his position in the market.

Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher is the outsider among the top five and would represent the most ambitious appointment in this market.

The former Scotland captain is currently head coach of Manchester United's Under 18s, having briefly taken interim charge of the first team before Michael Carrick's appointment.

Fletcher has no permanent managerial experience, making Hibs a significant step into the unknown and helping explain his longer odds.

However, his profile and coaching background at United mean he is unlikely to be overlooked if he is open to the move.

For now, John Potter takes interim charge for Hibernian's next fixtures, with the permanent search already under way.
