Pressure is mounting on Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle United after back-to-back defeats against Everton in the space of four days.

The Magpies lost 3-1 away to the Toffees in the Carabao Cup last Thursday before suffering a 1-0 home defeat in the Premier League on Monday night.

Thierno Barry scored the only goal four minutes into the second half, while the home crowd voiced its frustration with boos at both half-time and full-time.

Substitute Jacob Ramsey was also sent off in stoppage time.

Newcastle sit 13th in the table with 11 points from nine games, having won three, drawn two and lost four.

Jaissle was appointed on 5 August on a four-year contract following Eddie Howe's departure, and accepted responsibility for the performance after Monday's defeat, saying: "I am responsible".

However, the club's position remains unchanged - reports last month suggested the board had no plans to part ways with the manager, and there has been no subsequent indication of a change in stance.

Jaissle therefore remains in charge at St James' Park.

However, should Newcastle decide on a change, football betting sites are likely to open a market on the next manager.

Who Could Replace Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle?

There is no market yet, so these are five realistic names based on who is available, who has been linked with the job and who has a link to the club's way of working.

Arne Slot

Arne Slot is an obvious contender given his Premier League experience. He won the title in his first season at Liverpool, but was sacked in the summer and has been out of work since.

He joined UEFA's Technical Observer Group in October, while reports in the Netherlands suggest he has turned down several offers as he waits for an opportunity at a top European club.

Before moving to Anfield, Slot won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup with Feyenoord.

Newcastle would be getting a proven winner, although he would be taking on a rebuild rather than inheriting a title-winning squad.

Julian Nagelsmann

Julian Nagelsmann has been without a club since leaving the Germany job after the World Cup.

Now 39, he has already built an impressive CV, taking RB Leipzig to the Champions League semi-finals and winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

He is likely to attract interest from several major clubs. Manchester United have reportedly made contact, while a return to Leipzig has also been mooted.

Recent reports suggest Juventus and Fenerbahce are not in the running, but competition for his signature could still make him difficult to land.

His attacking, pressing style could offer a fresh approach at St James' Park, while his record of developing young players would also appeal to Newcastle.

Kieran McKenna

Kieran McKenna left Ipswich Town in June after five years in charge, stepping away to spend time with his family following their promotion back to the Premier League.

The 40-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most promising young coaches in English football.

He has been linked with West Ham in recent days, although he has previously indicated that he intends to take a break from management.

McKenna knows English football inside out and would appear a natural fit on paper, but Newcastle would first need to establish whether he is ready to return to the dugout.

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas has helped transform Como since becoming their permanent head coach in 2024, guiding the Italian club to Champions League qualification last season.

The Spaniard has previously spoken about his ambition to manage in the Premier League, with Newcastle among the clubs mentioned as a possible destination.

However, he is also a minority shareholder at Como, meaning any departure would need to suit both parties.

Reports suggest he could return to former clubs for nominal compensation, potentially giving Arsenal or Chelsea an advantage if either were to make an approach.

Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank has been out of work since Tottenham dismissed him in February, with the 53-year-old Dane recently linked with Crystal Palace and West Ham.

His strongest credentials come from his time at Brentford, whom he led into the Premier League in 2021 before establishing them in the top flight despite operating on a comparatively modest budget.

That experience could appeal to Newcastle as they look to get more out of a young squad.

However, his difficult spell at Spurs has affected his standing, and he may not carry the same profile as some of the other names on the list.

Newcastle travel to Fulham on Saturday 7 November, with Arsenal visiting St James' Park on 21 November after the international break.
