EFL Cup Tips and Predictions
Brighton to win and BTTS - No
Brighton have made a flying start to the season under Fabian Hurzeler, and they have a friendly draw at home to Crawley in the second round. They have been really active in the transfer window which means they have options now to rotate the squad and stay very strong.
Georginio Rutter is one player in particular who is likely to start and should enjoy himself, and I would expect Brighton to put a few goals past Crawley and keep their good start going.
Over 3.5 goals - Everton v Doncaster
It has been a tough start to the season for Everton. They have shipped seven goals in their opening two matches, and more of a concern is how much of a mess they look from top to bottom.
Thankfully for Sean Dyche, they have a home draw against a League Two side. While that shouldn’t be taken for granted and they will probably need to field a strong side to ensure they get the monkey off their back, I think it will be an important night for the Toffees and they’ll get a few goals - just don’t be surprised if they concede one too.
Middlesbrough win
I was really impressed with Middlesbrough in their win over Leeds two weeks ago, so it’s a bit of a surprise that they have followed that up with a loss to Derby and then a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth which they needed a last-minute equaliser.
Nevertheless, I think they are still a good side and someone no one will be keen to be drawn against. Stoke have recorded successive defeats in the Championship themselves so Boro should fancy their chances.
Preston to win
Paul Heckingbottom’s Preston reign got off to a fine start over the weekend with a win over Luton but they now face a run of three away games on the bounce.
I think Harrogate are an often under-estimated side and are never a pushover despite what the odds suggest. I think they will make it difficult for the visitors and there won’t be much in it, but under Heckingbottom I expect Preston to become a pretty decent side.
