Next Wycombe Wanderers Manager: Five Potential Candidates to Replace Michael Duff

Wycombe Wanderers have sacked Michael Duff as head coach after a winless start to the season left them with just three points from their opening five League One games.

First-team coach Alex Morris has also left Adams Park, with the club saying an interim head coach would be confirmed later on Tuesday.

Duff had been in charge for almost a year after replacing Mike Dodds in September 2025, and although Wycombe recovered to finish last season in the top half of the table, a single win in their past 13 games in all competitions - including a Carabao Cup exit to Stevenage - left him as the first managerial casualty in England's top four divisions this season.

A club statement said: “The club has made the decision in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring and believes the time is right to take a new direction.”

UK betting sites have yet to open a formal market on Wycombe's next permanent head coach.

With no market currently priced up, here at Free Bets, we've picked out five names who could be in the frame for the Adams Park job.

Sam Grace

Sam Grace already knows the building. He took interim charge for four games in January 2025 when Matt Bloomfield left for Luton Town, and has since moved into a Development Group Manager role overseeing Wycombe's academy pathway.

He was among the names in the frame when the club last needed a permanent appointment in September 2025, and giving him the job now would mean promoting from within rather than starting another external search.

Kevin Nolan

Kevin Nolan has been out of work since Northampton Town sacked him in March, after just one win in 16 League One games left the Cobblers in the relegation zone.

The former Newcastle and West Ham captain spent 14 months at Sixfields and has said the experience hasn't put him off management, working in punditry while he waits for the right opportunity.

Michael Appleton

Michael Appleton left Shrewsbury Town in January after less than a year in charge, with the club just two points above the League Two relegation zone at the time.

He has since worked in TV punditry, most recently giving his verdict on Russell Martin's struggles at Leicester City, and brings managerial experience from Blackpool, Oxford United and Lincoln City.

Darren Ferguson

Darren Ferguson has been out of work since Peterborough United sacked him in October 2025, ending his fourth spell in charge of the club.

He was the bookmakers' favourite for the Salford City job in June before it went to Peter Cklamovski, and was also linked with the Leicester City vacancy over the summer, keeping his name firmly in the conversation for EFL jobs.

Karl Robinson

Karl Robinson has been out of work since Salford City sacked him in June, despite guiding the club to their highest-ever league finish and a League Two play-off final at Wembley.

He previously won the League One title with MK Dons and has taken both Oxford United and Charlton Athletic into League One via the play-offs, giving him a strong recent record of getting teams out of this level.

For now, Wycombe's interim head coach is due to be confirmed later on Tuesday, with the club's next game away to Leyton Orient on Saturday 12 September.
