Next Huddersfield Manager: Lee Grant Under Fire But Who Can Replace Him?
Craig Jones
I don't think there's a side in League One that "went for it" as much as Huddersfield did in the transfer window.
But eyebrows were raised when they accompanied that spending with an unknown, unproven manager in Lee Grant.
The start may have been positive, but now, it's pretty dire at the club, and the next Huddersfield manager talk has only grown over the past couple of weeks.
Here at Free Bets I take a look at why Huddersfield are struggling, and perhaps more importantly, who could come in to be the next Huddersfield manager and get them challenging where they need to be?
Next Huddersfield Manager: Lee Grant on the Brink of Sacking?
I don't think even the biggest Lee Grant fan will say he's not under pressure right now. It's five defeats in a row for The Terries, scoring three and conceding 10 in that period.
Dumped out of the cup at Bolton on Saturday, a side that's completed the double over them recently.
In the middle of those games? A 3-0 thumping dealt by Michael Duff's Wycombe, it wasn't too long ago that Duff entered Huddersfield to be the saviour, just to rub more salt into the wounds.
From the last nine games, Huddersfield have one win, one draw and seven defeats. The win came against Exeter, narrowly 1-0, one of the poorest sides in the league, and definitely one with the lowest budgets.
An attacking force of Dion Charles, Alfie May and Joe Taylor gives Huddersfield the best options in the league. With players like Mikel Miller and Marcus Harness in behind, an abundance of players who can help for a little further back.
But three goals in five games, or five goals in their last nine games, however you look at it, they're miles off.
Playing Alfie May out wide, as we've seen, playing Dion Charles out wide at the weekend, does Lee Grant have any idea how to fit his best players onto the pitch, can round pegs in square holes work? I'm guessing they can't.
I've no massive issues with how Huddersfield are defending. It's not great, but at the same time, they've got the players on the pitch to outscore any defensive issues, scoring is the problem.
Who Could Replace Lee Grant at Huddersfield?
There are no next Huddersfield manager odds with betting sites at the moment, they'll only come to life for Huddersfield should Lee Grant be sacked.
But in terms of who they could target, there are a few names out there that are worth noting.
Richie Wellens - Leyton Orient
I think anytime a top League One job comes up, Richie Wellens will be one of the first names mentioned, and with good reason.
This year hasn't so far gone to plan for Leyton Orient, but I'd argue they're not a million miles away from being where their budget should put them.
But last season was excellent, a well coached Leyton Orient side, with a few shrewd signings and loan moves, played well above their station, and led to Wellens being in demand over the summer.
There's a lot of 'what ifs' with Wellens, all positive, as people wonder just what he could do in this division with a bit of money behind him.
It would need investment from Town though. When Luton were interested in Wellens a few weeks back, it was reported that it would take £1 million to speak with him, due to his contract at Leyton Orient.
But after summer investment in the squad, should that matter? We've seen where Huddersfield went wrong by going for a rookie boss, Wellens is the opposite, and often to get that, you've got to pay.
Michael Beale - Out of Work
Every time I see a lower Championship job, or League One job come up, I wonder if Michael Beale is throwing his hat into the ring, and ready to return to management.
It would need a big League One club to get him at this level, but that's what Huddersfield have, a pulling power.
Whenever you think of Beale, immediately thoughts go to the tough end at Rangers and the disaster at Sunderland.
But let's look at the positives. Some of it at Rangers was good, even though they were always second best behind Celtic. What he did at QPR, which earnt him the Rangers job, was also very good in parts.
QPR have a small budget for the Championship, and briefly, he had them at the top of the table, that shouldn't be underestimated.
There's risks, potential flaws, and the question over whether he'd actually drop down to League One. But there's also no doubt that Michael Beale is someone that could come here for the long run, get this club promoted and then try to establish them as a Championship team.
Steve Evans - Out of Work
Hear me out with this one, as I know he'll not be popular with some. Is now just the time for someone to come in and do all of the basics correct, get the club discipline in order, and get people fighting for the shirt once again?
Are Huddersfield that good, that they don't need someone to come in and do all of the fine technical points that Lee Grant tries to convince everyone that he's working on?
I think the term firefighter could be used here, even though I don't think Huddersfield are far off being in the promotion hunt, should they turn things around quickly.
Is Steve Evans a long term project? Of course not. But there are worse suggestions for getting this team playing, and if they're playing as good as they can, without any extra from their manager, then they should still be good enough to challenge for promotion.
Let's not forget he's got plenty of EFL promotions on his CV.
What's Next for Huddersfield?
Two games this week could further pile the pressure on Lee Grant at Huddersfield.
They play on Tuesday night, at home to Mansfield in the EFL Trophy. With a win and a loss they're in second place in the group with this game left.
A win wraps it up, a draw leaves things dependant on others, while a loss would see them eliminated from the competition. It's the lowest of priorities for them, but you'd feel Grant has to go strong here, and get a win from somewhere.
Then at the weekend, it's League One action with a home game against Plymouth. The good news for Grant here is that Plymouth are really struggling themselves, in the relegation zone, and also failing to pick up points at a rate anywhere near good enough.
