Is Keir Starmer on the brink of exit? It certainly appears to be heading that way, and with his exit in mind, it's time to look at the next Labour leader odds, to see who could replace him.
Assuming Starmer loses his fight, whoever becomes the next Labour leader will also be in charge of running the country. With pressure from the right, in particular Nigel Farage, it'll be interesting to see which way Labour go next.
Starmer is very much on the right of the party, more of the same, or a swing left?

Next Labour Leader: Who Could Replace Starmer?
The moment that Keir Starmer leaves, if he leaves of course, expect plenty of names to throw their hat into the ring, and it's likely we'll see some remove themselves from the conversation.
Based on what we've got at the minute, here at Free Bets we've got a look at the likely candidates who will want to take on the role.
Angela Rayner
Angela Rayner has been Labour MP for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015, becoming the first woman to represent the constituency. A former care worker and Unison trade union official, she rose quickly through Labour's ranks under Jeremy Corbyn, serving as Shadow Secretary of State for Education.
In 2020, Rayner won the deputy leadership of the Labour Party with 52.6% of the vote but did not run for the leadership itself, supporting Rebecca Long-Bailey instead. Following Labour's 2024 election victory, she became Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary. However, she resigned in September 2025 after breaching ministerial code by underpaying stamp duty on a property.
Rayner is currently a backbencher, though recent reports suggest she may be preparing for a future leadership challenge. She has never previously run for Labour Party leader.
Wes Streeting
Wes Streeting has served as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since July 2024. First elected as MP for Ilford North in 2015, he progressed rapidly through shadow cabinet roles before becoming Shadow Health Secretary in November 2021.
As Health Secretary, Streeting has implemented significant NHS reforms and achieved notable reductions in waiting lists. A prominent figure on Labour's centre-right and associated with the Blairite wing of the party, he is increasingly viewed as a potential future leader.
Streeting has never run for Labour Party leader, though recent political commentary suggests he may be positioning himself for a future contest amid current political turbulence.
Ed Miliband
Ed Miliband has served as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero since July 2024, and has been MP for Doncaster North since 2005. Under Gordon Brown's government, he served as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (2008-2010), overseeing the introduction of the Climate Change Act.
Most significantly, Miliband served as Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015, defeating his brother David in a dramatic leadership contest in September 2010. His tenure featured a leftward shift under "One Nation Labour" branding and opposition to austerity. He also reformed Labour's leadership election system to "one member, one vote" in 2014. After Labour's 2015 election defeat, he resigned and spent time on the backbenches before returning to Starmer's shadow cabinet in 2020.
Recent speculation suggests Miliband may consider another leadership bid, though his allies deny this.
Shabana Mahmood
Shabana Mahmood has served as Home Secretary since September 2025, having previously been Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor from July 2024 to September 2025. Elected as MP for Birmingham Ladywood in 2010, she became one of the UK's first female Muslim MPs. A qualified barrister, she graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford in 2002.
Under Ed Miliband, Mahmood held various shadow cabinet positions including Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury. She resigned following Corbyn's election as leader and supported Owen Smith in the 2016 leadership challenge. She returned to the shadow cabinet under Starmer in 2021, becoming Shadow Justice Secretary in 2023.
As Home Secretary, she has implemented controversial policies including expanded facial recognition technology and hard line immigration reforms.
Yvette Cooper
Yvette Cooper has served as Foreign Secretary since September 2025, previously serving as Home Secretary from July 2024 to September 2025. She has been MP for her Yorkshire constituency since 1997, making her one of Labour's longest-serving parliamentarians. A PPE graduate from Oxford with first-class honours, she worked as an economics journalist before entering Parliament.
Cooper served in Cabinet under Blair and Brown, including as Chief Secretary to the Treasury (2008-2009) and Work and Pensions Secretary (2009-2010). She was Shadow Foreign Secretary (2010-2011) and Shadow Home Secretary (2011-2015) under Ed Miliband.
Cooper ran for Labour Party leader in 2015, coming third with 17.0% of the vote and losing to Jeremy Corbyn. After chairing the Home Affairs Select Committee (2016-2021), she returned as Shadow Home Secretary under Starmer. She is the first woman to have served in both Home and Foreign Secretary roles.
