Next Manchester United Manager: Leading Contenders

The football betting market is established, here's a look at the leading contenders for the job.

Darren Fletcher

Now interim manager of Manchester United, for the short term at least, Fletcher was the head coach of Manchester United u18s prior to this change.

A successful playing career with the club, he won it all, five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

Fletcher has been around the club since 2020, and is a man well respected with fans. His two sons are youngsters at the club, and both were on the bench in Sunday's draw at Leeds.

He's been a first team coach, a head coach at various youth levels and a technical director at the club. You can't help but feel he's someone the hierarchy have been working with, with a view to a bigger position in the future.

Oliver Glasner

Oliver Glasner is the current manager of Crystal Palace in the Premier League, having taken charge in February 2024. Under his leadership, Palace achieved a historic milestone by winning the 2025 FA Cup, the first major trophy in the clubโ€™s history, after defeating Manchester City in the final.

Glasner also guided the team to victory in the 2025 FA Community Shield, further cementing his impact. His success led Palace to qualify for European competition and marked one of the most successful periods the club has ever experienced.

Currently out of contract in the summer, and disputing his future with Crystal Palace, the feeling is that he wants to move onto bigger and better things.

Enzo Maresca

Enzo Maresca is currently without a managerial job after leaving his position as head coach of Chelsea last week by mutual consent.

During his time at the club, he enjoyed notable success, guiding Chelsea to victory in the 2024โ€“25 UEFA Europa Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, delivering the clubโ€™s first major trophies since 2022.

He also led Chelsea to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League in his first full season.

Maresca departed following a poor run of results and growing tensions with the clubโ€™s hierarchy, which put him in a position where he felt he could not continue at the club.

Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick is currently without a managerial role following his departure from Middlesbrough in June 2025. His most recent job was as head coach of the Championship club, where he initially made a strong impression by guiding the team into the promotion play-offs in his first full season.

However, Middlesbrough failed to achieve promotion, and inconsistent form eventually led to his dismissal.

You get the feeling that his connection to the job wouldn't be there, if he hadn't played for United, such is the step up that would be required. But despite that, I do still think he is a good, promising coach that has a future in the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate most recently served as manager of England, stepping down after Euro 2024.

During his time in charge, he led England to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, delivering the countryโ€™s most consistent period of tournament success in decades.

Since leaving England, whenever Manchester United have been mentioned, his name has come up in the conversation, though whether he wants to go down the route of club football remains to be seen.
