Next Watford Manager: The Contenders

There are a couple of standout names in the list, but as ever with Watford, you feel like they won't make the obvious appointment.

It has been a bit of a poisoned chalice over the last decade or so, so don't be surprised if some of the younger, promising managers choose to distance themselves from the role.

Will Still

It might not have gone to plan at Southampton, but Still is still considered a promising young manager, albeit one now with a point to prove.

He has made it clear that he is ready to get back into the game after a few months out to recover from the bruising at Southampton, and a job at Watford could appeal to him and his family.

He could be one of those however that is reluctant to take on such a volatile role so soon in his career.

Marti Cifuentes

Cifuentes is another whose shot at a big job in the Championship didn't go to plan after losing his job at Leicester just over a week ago, but could it be too soon to jump straight back on the horse?

He attracted criticism for flirting with the West Brom role at the end of last season while still in charge at QPR, eventually leaving by mutual consent and end up taking the Leicester role.

If he hadn't just left a role, this one might make a bit more sense but he will hope to be able to hold out for a more stable club in the summer.

Russell Martin

There's one thing in common with all the candidates so far, and that's that they have each had a difficult role at the start of this season that didn't end well.

It's no surprise, given how toxic the atmosphere got in Glasgow, that Martin has taken a bit of time out since losing his Rangers job, and a return to the Championship looks certain.

Given he has a promotion to the Premier League on his CV, you might think Martin could command a better role than Watford in the summer and he might have his eye on a relegated club and a bit more of a project, but he has a lot of rebuilding to do with his reputation.
