US Open Tennis 2022 Betting Tips

The US Open

Flushing Meadows, New York City

Monday August 29 - Sunday September 11, 2022

Last year, Emma Raducanu produced one of Britain’s greatest sporting success stories by winning the US Open women’s title and becoming the first qualifier to win a grand slam crown.

Since then, despite being elevated to world number 11, the 19-year-old hasn’t had the year she would have wanted, and it would be a major surprise if she defended her crown.

Russian world number one Daniil Medvedev is the defending men’s champion. But the field of challengers has been weakened by the omission of unvaccinated Novak Djokovic, who can’t travel to America because of their travel rules around Coronavirus.

Djokovic misses his second major of the year after his well-documented last minute omission from the Australian Open in January.

So, let’s get into it.

An open field for women’s event headed by Swiatek

I think an each/way nibble at Daria Kasatkina at 35/1 with Unibet is very much worthwhile here. The first two places pay, so effectively you are hoping the Russian world number 10 reaches the final.

Women's US Open

For the last two grand slams, I confidently suggested Iga Swiatek as the play to win the tournament - and we won one and lost one at the French and then Wimbledon.

Here, however, in the Big Apple, I’m not so sure that it’s wise to take a bite on the Polish world number one at 9/2.

Since losing to Alize Cornet in the last 16 at Wimbledon at the start of last month, she has lost three of seven matches, including two at US Open warm-up events on hard courts. Her air of invincibility of earlier in the year has been eroded.

This is such a wide open field to win the women’s event. That is indicated by the fact that world number two Anett Kontaveit being a whopping 50/1 and world number three Maria Sakkari is at 33/1.

So why Kasatkina? The 25-year-old is, first of all, in decent form.

After not being able to play at Wimbledon as a Russian, she has gone on to win a US hard court event at San Jose earlier this month.

And in her two grand slam appearances - a third round exit in Melbourne and a semi-final finish at the French - she ran into Swiatek.

There are a number of players who are ahead of her in the betting who I have doubts about, including Raducanu, who is 26/1. I’d be wanting nearer 50/1 on the Brit after what has been a pretty dreadful last year since claiming this title.

Men’s event not dissimilar to the women’s in terms openness

Warning. This is not a preview which will pick out some short-priced hot favourites.

Those of you who read my cricket previews will know that I often put up player performance bets with bet365, often priced up at 5/6. Well, you certainly won’t be getting those kind of prices whilst reading here.

I’ve looked at the runners and riders and their form and come to the conclusion that why not chase a big price given the lack of a standout candidate.

Favourite Daniil Medvedev is just too short for me at 28/11. But it is a man he beat en-route to last year’s crown who I think could have a good fortnight.

Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime, a beaten semi-finalist here last year, is 35/1 with SBK. Again, like Kasatkina in the women’s draw, I would be having a dart on the 22-year-old each/way. The first two places pay.

He clearly has the game to do well at Flushing Meadows and has reached a couple of quarter-finals in recent weeks (Montreal and Cincinnati).

Home star could upset Swiatek in quarter-finals

American Jessica Pegula, 28, is the top ranked American player at number eight in the world, and she is in the same quarter of the draw as Iga Swiatek.

Pegula has reached a couple of grand slam quarter-finals already this season, at the Australian Open and then at the French Open a few months later. And she was beaten by the eventual champions (Ash Barty and Swiatek) at both.

Pegula has reached a couple of hard court warm-up quarters-finals in recent weeks. So she is there and thereabouts.

And I would be keen to take the 11/2 Ladbrokes have on her to win Quarter One.

Effectively, you are backing the daughter of the owners of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres NFL and NHL teams to reach the semi-finals.

She will most likely have to beat Swiatek on the way, but there is no reason why not when roared on by a home crowd.

Cam can carry the can for the Brits

Cameron Norrie is also the 11/2 second favourite with Ladbrokes to win Quarter Four in the men’s draw, behind Rafa Nadal and ahead of the likes of Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov and John Isner.

There are clearly doubts over Nadal, including a lack of game time since his abdominal injury at Wimbledon, while his pregnant wife was rushed into hospital earlier this week.

Norrie was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, so why not again here?

He beat world number four Carlos Alcaraz, one of the game’s rising stars, en-route to the Cincinnati semi-finals last weekend.

So, come on, a little romanticism hurt no one. Let’s take the view that Cam can!

US Open Tennis Betting Markets

There are a variety of bet options available when it comes to US Open tennis betting:

  • Outright – Simply who you think will win the men’s or women’s tournament in your US Open tennis predictions 2022.
  • Match Betting– a two-way market where you are simply betting on the outcome of any individual match. Be aware that favourites will often be priced at extremely short odds.
  • Set Betting– Betting on the final set score in any given match, e.g. if you think Djokovic might start slowly, backing him to win 3-1 could be a better option than backing him in the Match Betting at unattractive odds.
  • Total Games Over/Under –An Over/Under bet on the total number of games played in a match. Theoretically, the closer the odds between the players going into the match, the more likelihood of it going the full five sets (three sets for women). The favourites can often breeze through the opening rounds whilst losing just a handful of games.
