Charlie McCann's Tips - Monday, 9 November

12:50pm Carlisle - Hello Judge (Nap)

Ann Hamilton introduced a nice hurdling newcomer – Elusive Dreams – at Hexham on Friday, and the 2m3f+ Veterans’ handicap Chase is very much a home game for HELLO JUDGE (Nap), who has won six of his thirteen starts at the Cumbrian track and can reverse Newcastle form with likely market leader Parisencore.

Nicky Richards has his string in tremendous form and introduces the exciting Poets Whisper half an hour earlier. Parisencore had the form of last month’s Bobby Renton win at Wetherby franked by the excellent win of Josh The Boss at Aintree on Saturday. He is rising eleven yet is in the form of his life and races from a career-high mark this afternoon, but he will relish underfoot conditions and the cheekpieces he wore last time are, unsurprisingly, retained.

Hello Judge has been ridden by the excellent Danny McMenamin for all nine of his career successes, but he is retained to ride Parisencore, which allows former champion jockey Brian Hughes to take over in the plate. Hughes has only ridden the 10-year-old once previously, when finishing last at Sedgefield on soft ground back in January 2023!

Parisencore beat Hello Judge by 4l at Newcastle back in the spring, and the latter has a 5lbs pull in the weights – 8lbs if you include his jockey’s claim – back at his beloved Carlisle. He returned from a six-month break when runner-up to the promising Keithandkaty over course and distance from this mark last month.

Hello Judge is entitled to come on for the run, and it is likely that connections have had this race in mind for some time.

Recommendation: Hello Judge (Nap) - 7/4 with bet365

3:02pm Carlisle - Oh Clare

Harmony Heights is a big girl and has the size to make a better chaser than hurdler for Fergal O’Brien. She finished last term winning over just shy of 3m over hurdles at Chepstow from a 4lbs lower mark and is considered the chief threat to another chasing debutante in OH CLARE.

The mare has had five career starts, with her victory coming at Lingfield in a Maiden Hurdle back in December. Her four defeats have all been at Carlisle, but she finished second in both starts over timber here last season, including from a 4lbs lower mark here when last seen in February.

Trained by Jonjo & AJ O’Neill for Paul & Clare Rooney, the mare is another whose physique suggests she will improve for jumping a fence. The mare who beat her last time – Severana – was beaten a length at Uttoxeter over hurdles on Saturday.

Recommendation: Oh Clare - 5/2 with bet365

A valuable 2m5f Beginners Chase at Stratford on good to soft ground has attracted just two runners. I know they have large stables, but you could have second-guessed what trainers – Olly Murphy and Dan Skelton – would be represented.

1:40pm Stratford - Sunshine Diamond

Lord Of Cheshire is returning from a 587-day lay-off, but he has a record returning from a 100-day absence or more of 2-1-1-1 and represents an inform yard. He does have stamina to prove, however, over the longest trip he has encountered to date, and he is not exactly bred for this 2m6f+ trip. That said, a market move for the Twiston-Davies nine-year-old would be worth noting.

The market suggested that there would be other days for Dan Skelton’s Major Fortune when a well-beaten third at Perth on his reappearance, but he jumped and travelled well for a long way and has been eased a couple of pounds for the run.

He remains 3lbs higher in the weights than when successful at Haydock over 3m1f back in the spring, and his record in cheekpieces last season read 1-2-2-1. The aid was not applied in Scotland and is left off again this afternoon. Make no mistake, he ran well at Perth, and this track and trip should be ideal, but preference is for SUNSHINE DIAMOND having just his second start over fences.

Sunshine Diamond was no match for Skelton’s promising Big Cadillac at Worcester last month, but he is entitled to come on for the run, and Sean Bowen takes over for the first time for Neil Mulholland. Like Major Fortune, he has been dropped 2lbs for his reappearance.

The seven-year-old failed to win in five starts between the flags, but he jumped well enough at Worcester on ground which may have been softer than ideal.

Sheldon is a personal favourite, but after the ride Ben Macey gave Lihyan at Aintree on Saturday, it will take a leap of faith to back one of his rides in the short term.

Recommendation: Sunshine Diamond - 13/2 with bet365
