Charlie McCann's Tips - Sunday, 1 November

1:20pm Worcester - Crest Of Fortune

The Albert Bartlett winner Johnny’s Jury is likely to be all the rage on chase debut, but he looked like a dour stayer at Cheltenham and did his best work late on, finishing third at Aintree in their 3m Grade 1 Novice Hurdle. He has every chance of making up into a top-class staying chaser and won over 2m at both Exeter and Carlisle over timber earlier in the year.

Trainer Jamie Snowden started Wendigo off over 2m4f here last season, and he was beaten over a trip short of his best, and I will look elsewhere today although the grey is the best long-term prospect in the field.

CREST OF FORTUNE has invaluable chase experience and has earned a mark of 135 over the larger obstacles. He ran in two Grade 1 and 2 Grade 2 contests in his five chase starts last season, having opened up with an excellent second in a Cheltenham handicap at their Showcase meeting.

The six-year-old finished third in Aintree’s 3m Grade 1 Novice Hurdle (2025) and was beaten by the Wendigo at Newbury in the Grade 2 John Francome last November. It would be no surprise to see Johnny’s Jury head to the Berkshire track later in the month, but preference is for Crest Of Fortune first time out.

Recommendation: Crest Of Fortune - 9/2 with bet365

3:40pm Worcester - I Love You Sivola

I didn’t think it was much of a race that I LOVE YOU SIVOLA won at Hereford on fast ground on his penultimate start, but he subsequently won easily over a trip, arguably, short of his best at Fontwell on soft ground last time. He lost the race in the Stewards' Room, however, after weighing in 5lbs light, and he must race from a mark 10lbs higher than Hereford this afternoon. I think he can overcome the rise and land his hat-trick – at least of first past the post!

Trainer Max Comley was interviewed after his Hereford success, and he gave the impression he felt he had inherited a well-handicapped horse. I was not overly convinced at the time, but Fontwell suggested he goes on all ground and the return to a longer trip will suit the eight-year-old. Freddie Mitchell – who was in the saddle at Fontwell – retains the ride and takes off a valuable 3lbs.

Recommendation: I Love You Sivola - 9/4 with bet365

1:32pm Huntingdon - Back It Up (Nap)

Only four go to post for the Novices’ Handicap Chase and Broadway Honey will be a short price to land her hat-trick having made all at Fontwell (3m2f) and over course and distance last time from a 9lbs lower mark. Sam Twiston-Davies is at Carlisle - primarily to ride Potters Charm – enabling Amber Jackson-Fennell to take over in the plate, negating seven of that nine-pound rise.

The jockey has yet to ride a winner over fences, but this sound jumping mare looks the one to beat, although the market is likely to mirror those sentiments.

I am writing this before Saturday’s racing and will be monitoring the form of the Ben Pauling string, who are just looking in need of the outing, although this inmate is only returning from an 11-month break.

I thought I had unearthed one in BACK IT UP (Nap) on his chase debut at Uttoxeter last time but, despite jumping well, never got competitive under Johnny Burke. I hope Tom Bellamy gives this multiple winning pointer a more aggressive ride than was the case on chase debut, as he has won over 3m4f between the flags.

The selection has been eased a couple of pounds since Uttoxeter, and I am convinced he is well treated. The prospect of slightly quicker ground today is a positive, and it might be worth noting that he ran moderately over hurdles at the Staffordshire track in September, although he was returning from an 11-month break.

Recommendation: Back It Up (Nap) - 5/1 with bet365

Horse racing has long been Charlie's passion - ironic, really, as he'll never pass the vet again, as sports injuries have come back to bite - with a specialism in handicap chases over jumps and 1m+ handicaps on the level.
