Now let’s meet the team…

Ed Quigley

Ed Quigley grew up just outside Cheltenham, Ed spent over a decade with the Racing Post where he was best known for his Longshot Column, RPTV and as a weekly columnist in the Racing & Football Outlook.

Now as a Freelance Broadcaster and Journalist, he is a regular on Sky Sports Racing and Ladbrokes TV amongst other things. He will be adding his insight for Freebets.com and of course, naturally, will be the go-to guy for all things Cheltenham Festival related!’

Alan Kelly

Alan Kelly grew up watching horse racing on TV as a 10-year-old in the 1860s and quickly became hooked on the sport. At the age of 18 he began working in the betting industry and four years later became the proud owner of his own betting shop, a job he relished for the next 28 years.

Alan has been consistently successful, and crucially profitable, in his role at freebets.com since 2008, his best year coming in 2014 with a profit of £112.64 to a £1 stake for one daily tip.

Our resident racing almanac-come-tipster landed a circa £60,000 Scoop6 prize purse in 2002, for a stake of just £32, and has since secured several top 10 finishes, and a monthly prize, in the Tote Ten To Follow competition.

Feel free to check Alan Kelly’s horse racing tips on our dedicated page with daily predictions.

Charlie McCann

Charlie McCann was “the man the bookies feared” when racing correspondent/tipster for talkSPORT for best part of a decade, before jumping ship to the dark side, as Head of PR for Stan James and latterly Victor Chandler/BetVictor.

Charlie’s inability to pass the vet, however, persuaded him to revert to type and for the last couple of years I have had my own free daily racing website, before recently re-joining the freebets.com horse racing.

Please have a look over Charlie McCann’s horse racing tips where you can find the latest predictions on a daily basis.

Tipping Process

As regards how the tipping process works; it’s about trying to find horses which have a better chance than their odds may suggest. Taking into account past form, ground conditions, race distance and course experience are just a few of the many ways to evaluate ‘form.’

The better the race, the more reliable the process. Poor midweek racing for instance can prove unreliable. Bad horses, little worthwhile form to go on and plenty of ‘non-triers’ or those simply out for a run to get their handicap marks down.

Sometimes the tipping process requires a lot of intuition and second-guessing. You know, as has been the case recently, when tipping a horse at 4/1 and it drifts out to 20/1, for one reason or another, the chance of the horse winning is slim to say the least? Sometimes you just have to admit, you got it wrong!

Want to Know More?

If you’re new to betting on horse racing and need a little help on the terminology behind it then don’t worry, we’re here to help. You’ll find plenty of information in our handy Horse Racing Betting Guide, with full details on how to read a race card as well as the basics of betting.

As well as this you’ll also find more help on our tips below…

What is a Nap?

The tip (or Nap) being offered is the tipsters best and most reliable (almost certain) horse racing bet of the day.

It is usually with lower odds and a favourite out of the days’ many runs, in short, it is the one horse which is more likely to win than lose.

Therefore above you’ll find our best tip for the day highlighted in the Daily Nap section. The team use all of their knowledge and does plenty of research before offering his daily nap. His choice really does have the best chance of winning.

What is a NB?

A NB or Next Best, is essentially a tipster’s next best bet of the day. That means the Nap is the horse which we believe is his best pick of the day, and his Next Best will also be one that he believes has an extremely high chance of winning.

It’s a useful way of prioritizing the bets you wish to play, although of course with Scu offering tips, it’s rare you’ll ever come across a bad tip!
