Marco Materazzi Remembers 'That' Headbutt With Controversial Artwork
Former Italy defender Marco Materazzi has shared a piece of artwork displayed in his house depicting the infamous Zinedine Zidane headbutt on him in the 2006 World Cup final.
That night has become more iconic than other showpieces because of that incident, which reportedly occurred because Materazzi insulted Zidane’s sister.
But the pair had a footballing impact on the game, too, with Zidane opening the scoring from the penalty spot and Materazzi powering home a header to equalise. The Azzurri went on to win on penalties.
Now, 12 years on, Materazzi clearly looks back on that incident with fondness. While Zidane may see it as his biggest regret, the former Inter defender celebrates it.
