We've got five tips this week for the US Open from our resident golf expert, Ben Smith.
US Open Betting Tips
The third major of 2025 promises to pose the most difficult test of the golfing year so far, as Oakmont Country Club plays host to the US Open for the tenth time.
Dustin Johnson triumphed by three strokes with a score of -4 when he won at this course in 2016. Since then, Oakmont has undergone a significant restoration, featuring enlarged greens, repositioned bunkers, and over 100 yards of added length.
The USGA want a winning score closer to Angel Cabrera’s +5 in 2007. However, the rain, which is expected to come over the weekend, may scupper those hopes.
Newly-crowned PGA champion Scottie Scheffler is the clear favourite. At 5/2, the world number one is the shortest price any man has been to win a major since Tiger Woods went off at 9/4 at the Open Championship in 2009.
Bryson DeChambeau is seeking a US Open hat-trick, and he provides the biggest threat to Scheffler as far as the market is concerned. Jon Rahm is next, while Rory McIlroy has slipped down to fourth in the pecking order after a poor run since Augusta.
Winner - Xander Schauffele (Each-Way) (7 places)
It is unwise to go into a US Open without at least one from the top on the betting card. Scheffler is, of course, the most likely winner, but while I’d consider 5/2 a fair enough offering, it’s not what I would call a value bet.
DeChambeau is also too short for my liking. His irons are too inconsistent for me to be getting involved at 7/1 in an event where Scheffler enters in imperious form.
Rahm got into contention at Quail Hollow, and that has been viewed as a positive by many, but he quickly faded away as the finish line drew nearer, and I have doubts over his ability to close out a major currently.
McIlroy isn’t an option after his latest showings, so we’re into 20/1+ territory, and that’s where I’m firing my two biggest bullets.
Xander Schauffele was a 10/1 shout for last year’s US Open. Things are different now as he continues to rebuild after an eight-week injury layoff at the start of 2025, hence more than double those odds at Oakmont. Still, six consecutive starts gaining strokes from tee to green are encouraging.
What's more, Schauffele has an outstanding record at this tournament, coming in the top 10 in seven of his eight US Open starts, with the only exception being a 14th-place finish in 2022.
The two-time major champion is undoubtedly among the small, elite group of golfers widely regarded as having a genuine chance to win this week. On that basis, grabbing him at 22/1 with favourable place terms feels like good business.
Winner w/o Scheffler - Ludvig Aberg (Each-Way) (6 places)
Ludvig Aberg has had a strange year. The victory at Torrey Pines was stunning, but there have been some uncharacteristic displays since then. He arrived at the Masters off the back of two missed cuts, but was up for the task at Augusta and was still in the hunt for the green jacket as he walked onto the 17th tee on Sunday.
Even that was something of a false dawn, as he followed that up with three below-average performances with his irons.
The Swede played himself back into form at the Memorial Tournament, quietly delivering a T16 while gaining more than five strokes from tee to green. Even more impressive was his ball striking at last week’s Canadian Open, where he gained off the tee and on approach in all four rounds.
It has been a year since Aberg put together consecutive starts with such favourable tee-to-green figures. That can’t go ignored, especially with such a generous price being laid in the ‘Without Scheffler’ market.
Winner - Corey Conners (Each-Way) (8 places)
Rain could cause problems for the shorter hitters in terms of staying competitive, but there will be dry spells, so I still believe it makes sense to get a diverse range of golfers on side in terms of skillsets.
Corey Conners will find fairways and greens as reliably as most of the field. That alone has helped him make his last seven cuts at majors, including a T9 at the 2024 US Open.
His long irons are particularly strong, so if he finds fairways at his usual rate, his floor should be pretty high at Oakmont despite his lack of distance.
Winner - Russell Henley (Each-Way) (7 places)
Like Conners, Russell Henley achieved his best US Open finish a year ago. Even at the age of 36, there is a sense that the American is a major champion in waiting.
The putter has been cold since his success at Bay Hill in March, but two-putts will do just fine at Oakmont this week, and Henley is one of the better lag putters in the field.
He gained over nine strokes on the greens at Pinehurst last year. Repeating that is unlikely, but if his irons are as dialled in as they were at Muirfield Village a fortnight ago, he’ll give himself every chance of a place at least.
To Make the Cut - Chris Gotterup
‘Swing hard and don’t worry’ is how Chris Gotterup’s swing has been described. While the USGA have done all they can to prevent the bomb and gauge approach from working at this event, stopping it completely is easier said than done.
Those with the highest club head speed have an advantage in getting out of the thick rough at Oakmont, and few rank higher in that category than Gotterup, who made the cut on his US Open debut in 2022.
He didn’t make the weekend at TPC Toronto, but his form on the PGA Tour before that saw finishes of 28-13-15-12-18, despite losing strokes on the greens in all measured events during that stretch. Some top finish props might also be worthwhile for the 25-year-old.
