Charlie McCann's Horse Racing Tips Wednesday, 28 October - Nottingham & Newton Abbot
Charlie heads to Newton Abbot on Wednesday for his best bet

It's a busy day of racing action in the UK and Ireland, and Charlie McCann is here with his exclusive free horse racing tips - only at FreeBets.

3:46pm Nottingham - Mighty Quiet
Wellwhatshappenin has only been raised 3lbs for a fluent win at Ffos Las on soft ground over today's 10f trip. A 7f polytrack winner back in Ireland, he had looked a non-stayer over this trip when grained in Ireland, but the four-year-old ran a career best last time, building on a staying on second also at Ffos Las over a mile on his penultimate start.
Sweet Kiss has been raised 4lbs for scoring at Redcar (good) last time, and he will need a career best to defy the rise on ground which is likely to be softer than ideal.
Simon Walker last rode the winner of this corresponding amateur jockeys' event back in 2018, and he is not the force of old in the saddle. He is 0-16 in 2026 and perhaps retirement beckons. I hope there is at least one last hurrah, and the mare MIGHTY QUIET gets the vote for Harry Charlton.
The five-year-old ran no sort of race at Redcar on ground faster than ideal when last seen in August, but this is her time of year, with her wins coming in September and October, and she is 4lbs lower than when runner-up at Bath on heavy ground this time last year. She comes here fresher than most, and the yard's last five runners have finished 1-2-1-2-4.
Recommendation: Mighty Quiet - 5/1 with bet365
Soft ground at Newton Abbot, and they will be omitting two fences per circuit – the open ditch on the back straight and water jump on the side of the course.
1:51pm Newton Abbot - Real Quartz
REAL QUARTZ cost Sir Alex Ferguson and Ged Mason £190,000 after winning a modest point-to-point in his native Ireland and landed both hurdle starts for connections last season at Carlisle and Doncaster when last seen in December. He was being aimed at the Grade 2 3m River Don back at the South Yorkshire track the following month but incurred "a small injury" which ruled him out for the rest of the season.
An opening mark of 127 looks workable although he is hardly thrown in for his handicap debut. He has had wind surgery over the summer, and this intermediate 2m5f+ trip looks an ideal starting point, although Dan Skelton believes he will stay 3m going forward.
It is nice to see Lallygag – one of two runners for the 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls - back after two years off the track, but he is entitled to need the run. Vol Royale won three of his last four starts last season, and Kayley Wollacott has booked Sean Bowen, which suggests the six-year-old will be ready first time out.
His three wins all came at Hereford, and he has stamina to prove, but he looks the main danger with Mooreland Rambler – another last-time-out winner – having no history of going well fresh and likely to need the run.
Recommendation: Real Quartz - 5/4 with Ladbrokes
2:21pm Newton Abbot - Alright Dai
Neil Mulholland's last three runners have form figures of PU-PU and last of fifteen, but he has had his fair share of winners, and I hope to see ALRIGHT DAI leave behind an underwhelming reappearance at Southwell at the beginning of the month when last of four over three miles.
The ground may have been a shade lively for the selection at Southwell, but he led over the first two fences before almost landing on top of the third. Conor O'Farrell just hunted the selection around at the back of the field after that early error, but he jumped well in arrears save corkscrewing at one on the second circuit.
The selection does stay 3m, but the return to soft ground will suit over this 2m5f trip. Harriet Tucker is still looking for her first winner of the season but has ridden three chase winners and takes off a valuable 7lbs. If she can get the selection jumping on or near the lead, then I think he will take some pegging back with the "net" at Southwell likely to bring him forward.
Dwight K Schrute only got as far as the seventh fence on chase debut under regular partner Isabelle Ryder, and connections quickly aborted the chasing plan. Jamie Snowden reverts to the larger obstacles with his seven-year-old, who stays further. He has largely been kept away from soft ground but did run well on a similar surface at Sedgefield last term.
Recommendation: Alright Dai - 17/2 with bet365
3:21pm Newton Abbot - Sinchi Rocha (Nap)
Syd Hosie has gone 44 runners and 215 days since his last winner, and his recent runners have run as well as their odds suggested they would, so supporting the chasing debutant SINCHI ROCHA (Nap) comes with misgivings, but this soft ground winning hurdler and heavy ground Bumper winner – both at the minimum distance – will relish underfoot conditions and gets the vote.
A winner of his sole point-to-point over 2m4f on good ground, the chestnut gelding has the size and scope to improve over fences, and his chance might be compromised by the lack of fences. He will stay further going forward, and connections have booked Charlie Deutsch – which I consider a positive – and the stable did have a horse run well in third at Hereford – returned 14/1 – on Monday.
Recommendation: Sinchi Rocha (Nap) - 7/1 with bet365
This is Charlie's Nap of the Day selection - see how it stacks up against Alan Kelly's pick too.
