Blackjack Rules - The Basics

Compared to most other casino table games, Blackjack puts real control in the player's hands.
It's hugely popular both online and in land-based casinos, with countless variations and rule tweaks.
However, here at Free Bets, we focus primarily on European (Classic) Blackjack and the most common rules you'll encounter.
The Basics
Originally known as Vingt-et-un ("21"), the aim is simple: get your hand as close to 21 as possible without going bust.
Number cards count at face value (2–9), face cards are worth 10, and the Ace can count as either 1 or 11 - whichever benefits your hand most.
Go over 21, and you're bust, meaning an automatic loss.
If the dealer busts, all remaining players win, and if both the player and the dealer are under 21, the hand closest to 21 wins.
Multiple players compete against the dealer at the same table, and most games allow you to play more than one hand at a time (usually up to 6–8 hands in total across the table).
The Dealer Rules
Unlike players, the dealer has no strategic choices. In standard games, the dealer must hit on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more.
They cannot split, double down, or vary their play, which is why understanding basic strategy can significantly improve your long-term results.
How a Hand Works
Before any cards are dealt, you place your bet.
The dealer then deals two cards to each player (face up) and two to themselves (one face up, one face down).
If you're dealt a natural Blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card), you're paid at 3/2 - unless the dealer also has Blackjack, which results in a push.
If not, play moves clockwise around the table, with each player choosing whether to hit (take another card) or stand (stick with their total).
Players may also have the option to double down (double their bet for one final card) or split pairs into two separate hands, depending on the rules in play.
These decisions add depth to the game and are what make Blackjack one of the lowest house-edge casino classics when played with the right strategy.
