The History of Roulette
Literally translated Roulette means ‘little wheel’ in French and Free Casino takes a look at how from its humble French beginnings it has grown into the behemoth of a game that is well loved around the world today.
The game or shall we say the wheel itself was created a bit by accident. In the 17th Century French mathematician and scientist Blaise Pascal was attempting to create a perpetual motion machine. Although he was unsuccessful in his attempts it was this machine that formed the basis of what would later be known as the Roulette Wheel.
The first time the playing of Roulette was recorded was in a French novel during the 18th century and detailed the game as played in the Palais Royale Casino. It became popular within royal circles and the members of high society but didn’t take too long before the game made its way down the social ladder. Very soon middle and working class gamblers were also enjoying the game.
In the first instance the wheel was styled very similar to how the American version of the game is today with both a single and double zero slot. However, a new version developed by François and Louis Blanc removed the double zero slot to attract more players due to the improved odds. This change was embraced and ultimately became the ‘European’ version which was the default version of the time.
A strange or maybe just interesting fact about Roulette is that if you add together all the numbers on a Roulette Wheel together they come to ‘666’ which to many is known as the ‘number of the beast’. It was therefore rumoured that François Blanc had sold his soul to the devil.
Besides this interesting fact there are many other ways to get to the number ‘6’ on the table. Add all the numbers together in a column, then add the total together i.e. column one comes to 78 so 7+8=15 and 1+5=6. Each column results in the same. Therefore the final number for each column is 6-6-6. Add together each row of 3 numbers or 3 numbers positioned diagonally in a row and again you get ‘6’. Interesting or spooky?
Eventually the game settled in Monte-Carlo and it was mainly due to Roulette that Monte Carlo became the focus of high class gaming in Europe. It was from this European base that the game spread throughout Europe.
In the 20th Century there was a large spread of casinos opening up across the world, specifically in Monaco and Nevada. Eventually roulette was able to reach more players than it had ever done before. By the mid 90’s the first online casino’s appeared creating a new milestone for the game with the game then making its mobile debut in the 2000’s.
