How to Bet on the Championship

The EFL Championship offers a wide range of betting opportunities, from the promotion race and play-offs to individual fixtures and in-play markets.

Whether you're backing a team for promotion or picking a result on the weekend's card, the process is simple:

  1. Choose your market – decide what you want to bet on, such as match result, both teams to score, goals, player markets, promotion or relegation.
  2. Compare the prices – check the available odds across betting sites before choosing where to place your bet. Prices can vary, particularly on competitive Championship markets.
  3. Set your stake – choose an amount you're comfortable risking and remember that any bet can lose.
  4. Build your bet – place a single selection or combine multiple picks in an accumulator. Championship fixtures can also offer Bet Builders combining different markets from the same match.
  5. Review and confirm – check the selections, odds, stake and potential return on your bet slip before placing the wager.

In-play betting is available throughout the Championship season, allowing you to react to the action as matches develop.

Prices can move rapidly following goals, red cards, substitutions and changes in the balance of a game, so always check the latest odds before confirming an in-play bet.

Championship Betting Markets Explained

  • Match Result (1X2) – Back the home win (1), draw (X) or away win (2), with the market settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
  • Double Chance – Cover two of the three match outcomes with one selection, such as home win or draw, for a lower-risk alternative to backing a single result.
  • Both Teams to Score (BTTS) – Predict whether both sides will find the net at least once during the match.
  • Over/Under Goals – Bet on whether the total number of goals will finish above or below a set line, such as 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5.
  • Correct Score – Pick the exact final score; odds are generally higher due to the number of possible outcomes.
  • First Goalscorer – Predict which player will score the opening goal, with odds varying according to their position, form and expected playing time.
  • Draw No Bet – Back either team to win, with your stake returned if the match finishes level.
  • Handicap Betting – Give one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage before kick-off to create a more balanced market.
  • Bet Builder – Combine several selections from the same Championship fixture, such as a match winner, goals market and player selection, into one bet.
  • Accumulator (Acca) – Combine picks from multiple Championship matches, with the potential return increasing as selections are added, although every leg must win.
  • Promotion & Play-Off Markets – Bet on which clubs will secure automatic promotion, reach the play-offs or win the play-off final.
  • Relegation Markets – Predict which teams will finish in the bottom three and drop into League One at the end of the season.
  • Outright / Futures Markets – Season-long bets covering markets such as Championship winner, promotion, play-off qualification, relegation and top goalscorer.

Championship Format & Key Dates

The EFL Championship features 24 clubs, with each team playing 46 matches across the season (home and away against every other club) for a total of 552 fixtures.

Teams pick up three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a defeat, with the final league table decided by points, goal difference, and then goals scored.

Promotion & Relegation

The top two clubs are automatically promoted to the Premier League each season, while teams finishing third to sixth enter the Championship play-offs, with the winner of the play-off final claiming the third promotion place. The bottom three clubs are relegated to League One and replaced by three promoted teams.

Play-Offs

The teams finishing third to sixth compete in the Championship play-offs, with two semi-finals followed by the play-off final at Wembley. The winner earns promotion to the Premier League alongside the top two finishers.

The 2026/27 Championship Season at a Glance

Championship Betting FAQS

How many teams are promoted from the Championship?
Three teams go up: the champions and runners-up are promoted automatically, while the sides finishing 3rd to 6th compete for the final place through the play-offs.
What are the Championship play-offs?
The teams finishing 3rd to 6th contest two-legged semi-finals, with the winners meeting in a one-off final at Wembley. The winner earns promotion to the Premier League, making it one of the biggest games on the English football calendar
How many teams are relegated from the Championship?

What betting markets are available on the Championship?
Popular Championship betting markets include the winner, promotion, relegation and top goalscorer, while individual matches offer options such as match result, both teams to score, goals, correct score, handicaps and Bet Builders.
Can you bet each-way on the Championship outright markets?
Yes, some bookmakers offer each-way betting on Championship outright markets. Your stake is split between the selection winning the market and finishing within the specified places, with the available place terms and odds varying between bookmakers. Always check the terms before placing an each-way bet
