Championship Format & Key Dates

The EFL Championship features 24 clubs, with each team playing 46 matches across the season (home and away against every other club) for a total of 552 fixtures.

Teams pick up three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a defeat, with the final league table decided by points, goal difference, and then goals scored.

Promotion & Relegation

The top two clubs are automatically promoted to the Premier League each season, while teams finishing third to sixth enter the Championship play-offs, with the winner of the play-off final claiming the third promotion place. The bottom three clubs are relegated to League One and replaced by three promoted teams.

Play-Offs

The teams finishing third to sixth compete in the Championship play-offs, with two semi-finals followed by the play-off final at Wembley. The winner earns promotion to the Premier League alongside the top two finishers.
