World Cup 2026 Player of the Tournament Tips, Odds & Best Bets

June 8, 2026 at 6:30 pm GMT+1

The Player of the Tournament award, officially the adidas Golden Ball, goes to the standout performer across the whole World Cup as voted for by the media. With Spain, France and England heading a loaded field in North America, the 2026 race is one of the most competitive in years.

History tells you where to look. Of the 11 Golden Ball winners since the award became official in 1982, every single one reached at least the semi-finals, nine made the final, and four lifted the trophy.

Below we run through the leading contenders before laying out our three Player of the Tournament tips, laddered from the market favourite down to a genuine value pick. For day-by-day coverage of every fixture, our World Cup 2026 betting tips hub is updated throughout the tournament.

Player of the Tournament Contenders

The Golden Ball almost always follows a deep run, so the shortlist is built around the players carrying the strongest sides. Here are the five names most likely to be in the conversation when the trophy is handed out in New Jersey on 19 July.

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Yamal is the headline name for tournament favourites Spain and finished runner-up for the most recent Ballon d'Or, the highest placing ever recorded by a teenager. He does not even turn 19 until two days before the final, yet he is already the creative focal point of the side most fancied to go all the way.

The one caveat is fitness. A left-hamstring injury picked up in April means his minutes are being managed early on, with the Spain camp suggesting he may be eased in rather than starting every group game, which is a real concern for an award that rewards sustained, tournament-long influence.

Harry Kane (England)

Kane arrives in the form of his life after scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich this season. He is England's all-time leading scorer, won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, and is the undisputed focal point of a side rated among the top two or three to win the whole thing.

England's defensive record under Thomas Tuchel, a perfect qualifying campaign without conceding a single goal, points to the kind of deep run a Golden Ball bid needs. He currently sits at the head of the betting for the award.

Kylian Mbappe (France)

No active player has a stronger recent World Cup record. Mbappe won the Golden Boot in 2022, finished runner-up for the Golden Ball behind Messi, and has scored in each of the last two finals, including a hat-trick in the most recent one.

France sit firmly in the favourites bracket, so the platform is there. The only question mark is competition for the spotlight, with current Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembele and the in-form Michael Olise also in the France attack.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

The only two-time Golden Ball winner in history, in 2014 and 2022, is set for one final World Cup at the age of 38, turning 39 during the tournament. The pressure that defined his 2022 campaign has lifted, and a freed-up Messi could still produce decisive moments for the holders.

The likelihood of a managed, reduced role is the obvious worry. Voters tend to reward week-on-week brilliance, and that is a tall order at his age across a longer 48-team tournament.

Pedri (Spain)

Spain's midfield metronome is the value name in the conversation. A La Liga winner with Barcelona this season, he pairs elite control with end product, registering nine assists and a passing accuracy north of 90 per cent, and crucially he heads into the tournament fit and in peak condition.

The Golden Ball has a long history of rewarding deep-lying creators, with Luka Modric in 2018 and Zinedine Zidane the obvious templates. On the tournament favourites, and without the fitness cloud hanging over Yamal, he is priced far longer than he arguably should be. Michael Olise, Vinicius Jr and Portugal's Bruno Fernandes are the other names worth a glance further down the market.

Player of the Tournament Tips

Here are our three best bets for the Golden Ball, laddered from the shortest price to the biggest. Each is a standalone pick, and spreading a small stake across more than one name is a sensible way to play a market this open.

Tip 1: Harry Kane to Win Player of the Tournament

Kane is our shortest-priced pick and the current market favourite, and the logic is hard to argue with. He is the focal point and penalty taker for a side many expect to reach the final, coming off the most prolific season of his entire career.

The award almost always follows a deep run, and England's qualifying record, perfect and without conceding, suggests they have the platform. If England go far and Kane fires, he is the obvious name on the voters' lips, and you can weigh him up alongside England's World Cup odds.

Tip 2: Pedri to Win Player of the Tournament (Each-Way Value)

Our second pick steps well out in the betting, and it is the one we like most as a value play. Spain are the tournament favourites and the shortest of any nation to reach the final, so the platform for a Golden Ball run is the best on the board.

With Yamal's minutes being managed early after his hamstring injury, Pedri is the fit, ever-present way to back the favourites' engine room, and midfield orchestrators in the Modric mould have a strong recent record in this award. At a price many times longer than his more celebrated teammate, he is the standout each-way punt, so weigh up Spain's World Cup odds and the latest World Cup odds before backing him.

Tip 3: Florian Wirtz to Win Player of the Tournament (Outside Shout)

For our biggest price we are going off the beaten track entirely. Germany were beaten only by eventual champions Spain at Euro 2024, they have one of the kindest groups in the draw, and a four-time world champion with this much young talent is a real threat to reach the latter stages.

Wirtz is the creative heartbeat of that side and tends to save his best for the national team, having scored the opening goal of Euro 2024 and notched two goals and two assists in a 4-3 win over Switzerland in March. His debut season at Liverpool was a slow burn rather than a triumph, which is exactly why he is available at such a big price.

A deep run with Wirtz pulling the strings would put him right in the voters' frame, so check Germany's World Cup odds if you fancy the outside shout.
