Next Barnsley Manager Odds: Darren Moore Early Favourite to Replace Conor Hourihane

April 18, 2026 at 8:36 pm GMT+1

I've lost count of the number of times I've wrote a next Barnsley manager odds piece for Free Bets, it's way too many.

But here we are again, Conor Hourihane will leave the club at the end of the season by mutual consent, and the search is underway for a new man to replace him.

In the last five seasons, we've had six full time managers plus two caretakers, it's great for betting content, but dreadful as a club plan. Things need to change.

I could write an essay on the problems, but I'll not, instead let's simply go through the next Barnsley manager odds, and take a look at the leading candidates.

Leading Contenders for Barnsley Manager Job

I was at Oakwell today, and there was plenty of talk about Darren Moore. I've seen even more talk online, there's no smoke without fire, and if you believe what's been said today, then he's the number one choice and already held talks.

Of course, that doesn't mean it will definitely happen, we've seen plenty of people go odds on in this market in the past, only to not get the job.

Darren Moore - 1/1

I can definitely see why Darren Moore would be would be on the shortlist, and I can certainly see why he's favourite in the market given the talk I heard today at the game.

The fact that he's top of the betting, the fact that many fans would take him, is probably a realisation of where we are as a football club right now. Moore's last role saw him sacked at Port Vale after they struggled, and were bottom of League One.

But there's positives when you look back, two recent promotion wins under his belt, including getting out of League One, at the expense of Barnsley, with Sheffield Wednesday.

He knows the club, I think many within the club value that, so that's another tick for his chances.

Darren Ferguson - 6/1

Another person I'm not surprised to see here. Ferguson has been mentioned around the Barnsley managerial job before, and given he's out of work, and his stock has dropped, I can see why he's being mentioned again.

He's similar to Moore, it's a sign of where we are as a club that he's one of the main contenders, and someone many would be happy with.

At both Peterborough and Doncaster, he's won promotions in either League One or League Two, both automatically and by the playoffs, so certainly knows how to get out of divisions.

Lee Grant - 8/1

Manager of Huddersfield for the first part of this season, if Barnsley want more of a project than the finished article, Grant ticks that box.

There was a moment at Huddersfield when he was the next best thing, but that quickly turned south and he was sacked, though the team has failed to improve since he left, in fact, they might have actually got worse.

He's a young manager, wanting to progress, and in many ways, reminds me of Hourihane, so I'm not sure he would be the best fit.
