Next Luton Manager: Main Contenders
Luton want an instant return to Championship football, but who are the men that could guide them there?
Jack Wilshere
Undoubtedly the highest profile name among the candidates, Jack Wilshere enjoyed a glittering playing career even if it was cut short by injury.
He has since moved into coaching and made positive strides first with the Arsenal youth teams and then in the backroom staff at Norwich, where he finished last season as interim manager before leaving in the summer.
Wilshere has made no secret of his desire to move into management and dropping to League One would be an admirable move for someone with such a playing pedigree, but his lack of experience could be a turn-off for fans who demand an immediate return to the second flight.
Alex Lawless
If Luton are after a safe pair of hands, then Lawless would be the man given his long-term assosciation with the club.
He was part of the team as the Hatters won promotion to the EFL in 2014 after several near misses, and has since worked his way up at the club having initially worked with the under-18s before taking on other backroom roles and more recently stepping in as caretaker.
He would offer continuity and be a popular appointment among fans, but a lack of real experience is likely to see him step back into the staff.
Luke Williams
Luke Williams cut his teeth in youth and development coaching at Leyton Orient, West Ham and Brighton, before landing his first senior role at Swindon Town in 2015.
He later became assistant to Russell Martin namely at Swansea, and in 2022 was appointed head coach of Notts County, leading them to promotion via the National League play-offs in 2023. In 2024 he returned to Swansea as head coach, but was sacked in February 2025.
Russell Martin
What a story it would be if Russell Martin were to make an immediate return to football, swapping the Scottish Premiership for League One.
His spell at Rangers couldn't have gone any worse for him and you would think it might take him a bit of time to return to the dugout as he licks his wounds, and he is likely to have loftier ambitions than League One - even if his last two jobs have ended in disaster.
Will Jackson
Former sports journalist, formerly of PA Media, who spent years on the road specialising in football and cricket before moving behind a desk. More recently a PR manager before moving into the world of content and marketing with the Gambling.com group.
