How to Bet on Six Nations Rugby

We take a closer look at the most popular markets for betting on the Six Nations.

Six Nations Betting Markets Explained

Six Nations matches offer many betting options.

Each market has different opportunities and risks. Some are simple match predictions, while others are more complex. Knowing how these markets work helps you bet smarter on the Six Nations.

Match Winner

This is the simplest Six Nations bet. You pick which team will win the match, with the favourites offering lower returns and underdogs giving higher payouts - the winning margin doesn't matter.

Your team can win by one point or 30 - you still win. Bets are settled at full time, so extra time doesn't count even if your team ends up winning. This market is perfect for beginners.

It's easy to understand and doesn't need deep rugby knowledge. Just pick the winner and you're done.

Handicap Betting

Handicap betting makes uneven matches more interesting. The underdog gets a virtual head start and the favourite gets a points deficit.

For example, France -7.5 against Italy means France must win by 8+ points, and Italy +7.5 wins if they lose by 7 or fewer, draw, or win. This market works well when one team is much stronger.

Straight win odds often offer poor value here. You need to study recent form and head-to-head records, while home advantage matters too. Quarter-point handicaps remove the draw option.

Total Points/Tries

This market ignores who wins. You bet on total scoring from both teams, with betting sites usually setting a line like "over/under 45.5 points." You pick if the total will be higher or lower.

Total tries works the same way. A line of 4.5 tries needs 5+ for the over to win. This suits bettors who can judge attacking and defensive strength.

A number of things can affect how high-scoring a match will be. Things such as the weather, playing styles, the occasion (big matches often stay low-scoring) and bonus points can all play a part.

First Try Scorer

You pick which player scores the first try, with wingers and fullbacks usually offering good odds because they finish attacks more often, while forwards offer a stronger option from close range.

Check team tactics and player form before betting, because if a side has a strong pack and a good lineout, then you might look at someone like Dan Sheehan to get over from close-range.

Penalty goals don't count, only actual tries. If your player doesn't start, betting sites usually refund your stake. Rugby is unpredictable, so this is higher risk and the odds reflect that.

Championship Winner

This is simply predicting which team wins the Six Nations title.

Teams get 4 points for a win and 2 for a draw. Bonus points reward attacking play and close losses, which can make a huge difference at the end of the tournament, so you need to think about the fixture list.

Momentum builds through the tournament, so if you bet early, you can get the best value. Odds change fast after each round.

France, Ireland, and England usually start as favourites, but check each team's fixture order and the number of home games they each have, because it changes each year.

Triple Crown Winner

The Triple Crown goes to England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales if they beat the other three.

You don't need to win the whole tournament, just beat your Home Nations rivals. Ireland has won it most in recent years and usually start as one of the favourites alongside England, which means Scotland and Wales offer longer odds.

Focus on matches between these four teams. Forget about France and Italy games here. A team can lose twice and still win the Triple Crown.

Grand Slam Betting

A Grand Slam means winning all five matches - the ultimate Six Nations prize, because it is rare and hard to achieve which is why odds are generous.

Only a few teams have done it since 2000 because injuries and fixture pile-up create problems so take the run of fixtures into account.

Bet before the tournament for best value, because odds shorten fast for unbeaten teams as the tournament goes on. Back multiple teams if odds are good. Upsets happen often and ruin Grand Slam hopes.
