Liverpool vs Newcastle Tips
Saturday night entertainment doesn’t get much better than Liverpool against Newcastle, two Premier League gladiators capable of putting on a big show.
This fixture has a rich history and the clash at St James’ Park earlier in the season was no exception, Newcastle becoming a casualty of Liverpool’s good start to the campaign when the Reds struck an injury-time winner to secure a 3-2 win.
It’s all gone wrong for Arne Slot’s champions since that fine start and they enter this fixture winless in five in the league, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal.
With the title gone, the focus for Liverpool now is a top-four finish, but it’s a congested top end of the table and Newcastle could go level on points with the Merseysiders if they can secure a first league win at Anfield since 1994.
We’ve handpicked three tips and sought out the best free bet offers for the pick of Saturday’s Premier League games.
Tip 1: Liverpool to win & over 2.5 goals
Liverpool look the right side to be on here and sports betting sites make them odds-on favourites for what would be a 14th win in the last 19 Premier League matches against Newcastle.
Liverpool had the luxury of being at home in the Champions League in midweek, cruising to an impressive 6-0 win over Qarabag, while Newcastle may have some tired legs after holding PSG to a 1-1 draw in the French capital.
That’s arguably the Magpies’ best away result of the season with Eddie Howe’s men having struggled on their travels, winning just twice in 11 attempts on the road in the league.
They’ve also lost three of the last four games following a Champions League night, so the deck seems stacked against them.
For all Liverpool’s issues this season, they’ve been fairly regular home winners, taking the spoils in 11 of 18 games at Anfield in all competitions.
The concern for Arne Slot’s side are the mounting injury problems with Jeremie Frimpong limping out of the Qarabag game and joining Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, and, potentially, Ibrahima Konate in being absent from the Reds’ defence this weekend.
Newcastle have issues of their own with defensive duo Fabian Schar and Valentino Livramento unavailable, while Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes are doubts.
In contrast, both attacks look well stocked, and this game arrives off the back of Mohamed Salah finding the back of the net in midweek.
61 per cent of Liverpool’s league games have featured at least three goals and pairing over 2.5 goals with a Liverpool win - a bet that’s landed in five of the last seven meetings at Anfield - gets the nod as the first of three betting tips.
Tip 2: Cody Gakpo to score or assist
The absence of Alexander Isak from this game denies us of one potential storyline with Isak having been a regular scorer in this fixture, albeit in black and white before his contentious move to Anfield.
Another player with a decent record in this fixture is Cody Gakpo, who has four goal involvements (two goals, two assists) in seven games against Newcastle. Those two assists both came in the reverse fixture.
The Dutchman has 11 goal involvements (seven goals, four assists) across 29 games for the Reds this season and only Hugo Ekitike (10) has more goal involvements for Liverpool in the league than Gakpo (8).
Gakpo has been getting on the end of a lot of Liverpool’s attacks of late, registering 12 shots across his last two games at Anfield and should get more chances to add to his tally against a leaky Newcastle defence.
Tip 3: Liverpool to win, over 1.5 second half goals & Dan Burn to be carded
Liverpool backers may have to be patient with a staggering 68.6% of Liverpool’s league goals having come in the second half of games. Only Sunderland and Brighton have netted a higher percentage of their goals after the interval.
Both teams have tended to deliver plenty of entertainment after half-time with Liverpool games this season averaging nearly two goals per second period, while for Newcastle it's 1.6 total goals per second half.
Adding Dan Burn to be carded to our bet builder pushes the price into double figures, with the giant defender having amassed an impressive seven cautions and one red card this season, despite missing two months through injury.
Referee Simon Hooper did the reverse fixture between these teams and booked Burn that night. His previous assignment refereeing Newcastle was their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the back end of last season when he again carded Burn, and we are hoping he completes the hat-trick on Saturday.
