Types of Bets in Roulette

Types of Bets in Roulette

Playing Roulette can be a fun experience and in a casino you can sometimes find that lots of noise, buzz and excitement can surround a roulette table. Part of this reason is that it is such a simple game to play. You place your bet, watch the wheel spin and hope it is your lucky day.

Unlike the seriousness that can sometimes come with Blackjack or Poker, Roulette does not have you trying to second guess what your opponent or dealer is going to do next. You are simply watching that wheel spin and waiting for it to land on your winning number(s).

On saying this and putting aside any roulette strategy or system that you wish to try it would be still nice to walk away with a profit so knowing what types of bets are available and what odds they offer is useful. This is so that you can get the most out of your experience at playing the roulette table whilst hopefully making some profit.

OUTSIDE BETS These types of bets are ‘outside’ of the ‘inside’ bets and usually have a symbol or word associated with them. They are low risk wagers which means a far lower payout than inside bets.

Red and Black – This is one of the more popular bets due to its simplicity, using the 18 red or black numbers however the odds are just 1 to 1

Odd and Even – You bet on whether the number that appears will be odd or even of which there are 18 numbers of each. The odds of this bet are the same as the colours at just 1 to 1

1-18 and 19-36 – Both of these groups cover 18 numbers and again this offers odds of 1 to 1.

Although the three bets above are classed as “even money bets” your odds of winning are actually not 50/50 but 48.65% because each of them only covers just less than half of the table due to the addition of the green 0.

Dozens – This is where you place your chips on groups of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36). Since this is a large grouping of numbers the odds stand at 2 to 1.

Columns – This is basically similar to betting on dozens but using the 3 columns on the roulette table and each of them again covers 12 numbers in total. The odds again are 2 to 1.

INSIDE BETS These types of bets are made up of single numbers and small groupings of numbers and are as the name suggests on the ‘inside’ part of the Roulette table. As these are higher risk bets they will yield a better profit if you win.

Straight Up Bet – This is where you place your bet on a single number. This is the riskiest bet on the table, but it also has the highest pay-out at 35 to 1.

Split Bet – Here you bet on 2 numbers that are side by side on the roulette table (not the roulette wheel). The odds of winning with a split bet are 17 to 1.

Street Bet – This is betting on 3 numbers in a horizontal line (this is a street) on the roulette table. As an example, 1,2,3 is a street and so is, 4,5,6. The odds attached to a street bet are 11 to 1.

Corner Bet – This bet requires you to place your chips on four numbers that make a square on the roulette table. 1,2,4,5 is a corner bet as an example. The odds of winning a corner bet are 8 to 1.

Double Street (Line Bet) – This is similar to the street bet however it covers two streets at the same time rather than one. Therefore you will be betting on six numbers. These two lines must be placed next to each other on the table. The odds of success are 5 to 1

CALL BETS If the roulette table you are playing on offers these types of bets (as not all do) you need to be aware that the group of numbers you will be betting on are not related to how the numbers are laid out on the roulette table. Instead they refer to how the numbers are laid out on the roulette wheel which is completely different.

These types of bets are a way of betting on sections (slices) of the wheel at a time.

Voisins Du Zero – Here you are betting on a group of 17 consecutive numbers on the wheel. These numbers are sometimes known as ‘neighours’ of zero and run from number 25 around to number 22 with the zero being almost in the middle of these. The odds depend on which number hits with the best being 0,2 or 3 and an overall odds of winning of 45.9%

The Tier – This bet is a group of 12 numbers that are next to each other on the roulette wheel so covering almost one third of the wheel. The numbers are as follows: 27,13,36,11,30,8,23,10,5,24,16,33. The best odds here are 17 to 1.

Orphelins – This is an 8 number bet in total with three numbers that are next to each other on one sector of the wheel and 5 numbers that are next to each other on another sector. In fact it is the remaining numbers not covered in the above two Call Bets. These numbers are: 6,34,17 and 1,20,14,31,9. The best odds here are 35 to 1 if number 1 hits otherwise it is 17 to 1.
