And just like that… we are into the Last 32 of this year’s supersized World Cup.
Where better to kick things off than a mouthwatering tie between — checks notes — South Africa and Canada?
Okay, this might not be the glamour tie that everyone is yearning for, but now that the jeopardy levels have increased ten-fold, we’re expecting a good game inside the SoFi Stadium, Inglewood.
Canada were good in patches throughout the group stages, memorably flexing their muscles in a 6-0 win over Qatar, but a loss to Switzerland and draw to Bosnia and Herzegovina saw them stutter to second spot in a winnable group.
South Africa pulled up trees after a poor opening showing against Mexico in Group A. A win over South Korea saw them make history in advancing into the knockouts, and they couldn’t have picked a better opponent considering the giants of world football that have advanced.
Here are our three football betting tips and the best free bet offers ahead of Sunday night's clash in Los Angeles.
South Africa vs Canada Tips
Here are our top three World Cup betting tips and the best free bets ahead of this game.
Tip 1: Match Result: Draw
Canada’s failure to win their group means they have to play in the United States for this first knockout tie — more specifically, California — and this lack of home comfort will surely play into the hands of the South African underdogs.
These two have only played once: a 2-0 friendly win for South Africa back in 2007, so expect South Africa to have plenty of surprises in store for Jesse Marsch’s side who are still trying to work out their best XI.
South Africa’s win over South Korea showed their battling qualities. We’re not confident enough to pick them to advance here, but a draw in normal time could produce a nervy extra-time and possibly penalties for the joint hosts.
Tip 2: Cyle Larin to score
Cyle Larin has bagged in two of Canada’s three matches so far, bringing his impressive Southampton form to the World Cup.
The 31-year-old is only bested by Jonathan David in Canada’s all-time goalscoring records, and if Canada are to find the net in Inglewood then it would be a surprise if these two weren’t involved to some degree.
Larin is 6/1 to score the opener, but 2/1 is a good enough price for us for him to score in 90 minutes on Sunday night.
Tip 3: Cyle Larin to score, Teboho Mokoena to be shown a card & both teams to score
Along with Larin’s goal, we’re going to throw in a third card for Teboho Mokoena at this year’s tournament.
The combative midfielder was booked against Mexico and Czechia and will be back in the thick of it against Canada’s speedy midfield on Sunday night.
If we throw in a BTTS leg as well, a chunky 18/1 Bet Builder stacks up.
