Spain will aim to avoid becoming another shock World Cup story when they lock horns with Austria on Thursday in LA.
The Round of 32 has already seen a couple of surprise casualties in the form of the Netherlands and Germany, who were dumped out by Morocco and Paraguay respectively, and the Austrians will target a major scalp.

Tip 1: Spain to win by two goals
The group stage didn’t necessarily witness a vintage Spain, but the closest thing to that was the 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.
A goalless draw against Cape Verde was alarming and sent shockwaves through the tournament, but they topped Group H unbeaten, and their defence wasn’t breached.
Austria, on the other hand, scraped second place, and the riveting 3-3 draw with Algeria, which ebbed and flowed, would have delighted the neutrals.
In their past two meetings, Spain have won at a canter, firing nine goals past the Austrians.
Although the World Cup has thrown up some upsets, I don’t see that happening here. It could be a comfortable evening for Luis de la Fuente’s side, and I’m drawn to the winning margin line. Spain to prevail by two goals carries weight.
Tip 2: Lamine Yamal to score
Having picked up a hamstring injury in April, Lamine Yamal has been playing catch-up at the World Cup.
So far, he’s been restricted to 140 minutes of action across three group games, but he was most effective against Saudi Arabia.
His 45-minute display yielded a goal, and he attempted five shots with an xG (expected goals) rate of 0.86. Yamal, as we have seen, is one of the hottest talents in the game, and Spain must get him on the ball as much as possible so he can cause panic.
Yamal should get ample chances, and I expect him to come into his element here. The 18-year-old could stamp his authority on this game, and the anytime scorer market holds appeal.
Tip 3: Austria to receive most cards, Spain to win by two goals & Spain 3+ shots on target each half
During the group stages, Austria picked up four yellows, double that of Spain’s tally, so Austria receiving more cautions over the 90 minutes makes sense.
