1:55pm Bath - Colonnade

It is hard to get too excited about a horse beaten over twenty lengths when an odds-on favourite at Kempton last time, but time may tell us that Dialstone faced an impossible task against subsequent winner Fortitudine, who is now rated 105.

The third home at Kempton - Treble Bass - has since finished second to another Godolphin inmate, and Dialstone had run a terrific race on debut, finishing a neck second at Ffos Las. That doesn't tell the whole story, however, as he was slowly out of the stalls and must have been four lengths off the rest of the field after a furlong. In the circumstances, he ran a terrific race.

He is a brother to the useful winning stayer/hurdler Gnomon, but do note he refused to enter the stalls at Lingfield last month, and he looks to have an aversion to the stall.

COLLONADE steps up to 10f for the first time for Simon and Ed Crisford, and that could prove the key to him shedding his maiden tag. Owned by the Royal Ascot Racing Club, he cost 135,000 gns as a yearling and looked ready for further when a one-paced third at Lingfield last month.

I hope to see Jack Mitchell go forward on the selection. He is not guaranteed on breeding to appreciate 10f - by stamina influence Teofilo but out of a 6f-1m winner -, but he looks well worth a shot at the trip. Connections look to have found a winnable-looking race.

Recommendation: Colonnade

2:30pm Bath - Baarberini

The Best Betting Sites at Freebets.com Maiden over 10f at Bath Racecourse on Saturday afternoon is restricted to juveniles who have yet to win in three starts or less. It has attracted a competitive field of fourteen, with many of the top yards represented.

Able Tasman, as the name suggests, is the son of Derby winner Australia and comes from a stamina-laden pedigree. He will get 12f and more next term, but I thought he ran well when third at Lingfield over 7f on his debut at the end of May.

He was beaten the best part of 6l at Lingfield, but this additional furlong will see him in a much better light. A half-brother to four winners, his 100+ absence from the course is a slight concern, but the Watson yard have had four winners from their last eighteen runners (22%) in the last fortnight. The market should provide valuable clues as to stable expectations, but I thought he ran with considerable promise back in the spring and is a must for the shortlist.

The vote goes to BAARBERINI for James Horton, who makes his turf debut having finished in the frame in both starts on the all-weather. He was due to run in a Group 3 in Germany at the beginning of the month but was taken out, presumably on account of the soft ground.

He was sent off an odds-on favourite at Southwell last time, but had to settle for second behind Kodiac City of Richard Hughes. The winner has since run well in defeat in a Sandown Group 3, and Horton has had Danny Muscutt booked for the ride since the entries were revealed on Monday.

Horton has entered the selection in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket in a fortnight's time. He will have to win or go very close on Saturday, or that entry will be made to look decidedly fanciful.

Recommendation: Baarberini
