2:35pm Southwell - Four Springs

I am writing this before Onehundredneighty runs at Worcester for the yard on Monday, but the last four Ben Pauling runners have been sent off 4/1, 13/2, 4/1, and 15/2, yet beaten 62l, 47l, 25l and 27l. The money, unsurprisingly, has come for Onehundredneighty, which suggests there is plenty of confidence behind the recent Worcester winner, and I am looking forward to the yard’s chasing debutant FOUR SPRINGS.

The five-year-old won his sole point-to-point and landed a good ground Novice Hurdle at Hereford in November before finding the combination of soft ground and two-and-a-half miles too much of a stamina test at Sandown when last seen in the EBF Final when sent off just 10/1.

Kielan Woods takes over in the plate – Ben Jones and Harry Skelton not riding today – and he looks fairly treated off a mark of 118 despite having to carry top-weight in this 0-120. His point and Novice successes came on good ground – jumped slightly right - and he looks sure to go close, although I will be monitoring the run of Onehundredneighty closely on Monday.

Recommendation: Four Springs - 2/1 with bet365

The ground had gone against Palamon (3:10pm) at Worcester last time, and he will appreciate the return to a sound surface.

He is very well handicapped and looks the one to beat, but he was mulish at the start, slowly away and jumped out to his right on occasions. In the circumstances he ran very well, but Thelasthighking is dangerously well treated on his best form.

A race best watched.

2:55pm Hereford - Carrhill

The grey CARRHILL won his last two point-to-points back in the spring, and connections look to have found a very weak race returning to hurdles for Robbie Llewellynn.

The six-year-old showed next to nothing for his previous yard, but fast ground looks the key, and he was beaten a head by the 100-rated Foxinthebox on ground, arguably, softer than ideal between the flags back in April. On a line through the winner, the selection looks attractively treated from a rating of eighty-two, although it is interesting that he has his first start since May over the smaller obstacles rather than fences, given his chase rating is 3lbs lower!

The stable had a winner at Sedgefield last week, but the selection does not have a great record fresh. It will be interesting to see what the market makes of his chance, but he also runs in the colours of his handler, and he will have few better opportunities to break his rules duck.

Recommendation: Carrhill - 7/2 with bet365

7:00pm Wolverhampton - Zachary Hickes (Nap)

ZACHARY HICKES (Nap) is having just his second all-weather start – and first run on tapeta – but can land a fascinating 1m6f handicap for Roger Varian with Jack Mitchell taking over from Ray Dawson, who is Australia bound, where he will ride Goodwood winner Enfjaar in the Caulfield Cup at the weekend.

The four-year-old has only had six starts and got going too late when third at Yarmouth last time to the well-ridden Divine Knight last month. The son of Australia would not want the race to turn tactical, although his sole win to date came over 1m3f back at Yarmouth on fast ground in the height of summer.

Several in the field like to race prominently and/or have led in the past, which should ensure a decent test, and the Newmarket raider faces largely older and certainly more exposed rivals. I’m not sure these tight turns will suit the selection, and the hope is that he does not give the leaders too much rope, given he looked all stamina at Yarmouth last time.

Recommendation: Zachary Hickes (Nap) - 6/4 with bet365
