Charlie McCann’s Horse Racing Tips For Tuesday, 26 May - Redcar, Leicester & Bath

Charlie heads to Redcar on Tuesday for his best bet

It's a busy day of racing action in the UK and Ireland, and Charlie McCann is here with his exclusive free horse racing tips - only at FreeBets.com.

3:50pm Redcar - Classic Encounter (Nap)

The maiden Desert Shadow was first past the post at Beverley in a 10f handicap off a 2lb lower mark back in August and gives the impression – certainly on breeding – that he is worth a crack at a mile. That said, he has run twice this term and beat one horse home, finishing last of twelve in Meydan over 12f before finishing fifth of six at Southwell (1m3f).

I would expect Connor Beasley to try and make all under the stands' rail, but the hope is that Pat Cosgrave can stalk him on CLASSIC ENCOUNTER (Nap) and pounce late as they did over course and distance from a 7lbs lower mark last April.

He has been largely campaigned over further since and has not kicked on as I hoped – and expected – he would – despite winning at York over 1m1f under Will Buick from a 1lb lower mark back in July. He, too, has pulled up few trees so far this term, but he should have the race run to suit if, as expected, Desert Shadow goes forward, and he will relish the forecast fast ground.

Recommendation: Classic Encounter (Nap) - 11/8 with bet365

5:12pm Leicester - Pentonville

The filly Alice De Clare is likely to be all the rage for the 10f three-year-old handicap, having scored easily at Yarmouth last time on the back of an excellent run at Beverley on her penultimate start. I am not convinced that was the strongest race at Yarmouth, however, and a 9lbs rise will make life much tougher, although the booking of Oisin Murphy for the first time does catch the eye.

I prefer the chance of PENTONVILLE with cheekpieces applied on handicap debut by George Boughey. The gelded son of Too Darn Hot is not guaranteed to appreciate this ten furlong trip on breeding, but there is stamina on the distaff side of the family – dam a winner of the 10f trip – and I thought he ran well at Kempton when third – promoted to second – over a mile on his penultimate start.

I was surprised to see Zooter drop back to a mile last time, having finished second at Wolverhampton over 9.5f on his penultimate start. He wore cheekpieces last time, but trainer Jack Jones leaves them off this afternoon. This son of Australia is not as regally bred as Pentonville, but racing is not all about fancy pedigrees.

That said, I do think Pentonville can break his maiden tag at the fourth time of asking.

Recommendation: Pentonville - 5/2 with bet365

5:02pm Bath - Phantom Shadow

Two of the four-runner field in the concluding 1m three-year-old handicap are chasing a hat-trick with top-weight Legacy Rock carrying a 6lbs penalty for a fluent win at Windsor on Saturday evening. Jack Callan claimed 3lbs at the Thameside track, and you could argue that he is 9lbs higher this afternoon with Jack Doughty taking over in the plate today.

Mohmentous scored over course and distance last month from an 11lb lower mark before landing the odds at Redcar on his latest start. Both hat-trick seekers are clearly progressive, but I am going to take a chance on Harry Charlton's PHANTOM SHADOW.

The gelded son of Toronado was readily brushed aside by the progressive Foothold over course and distance last time, but I liked the way he kept on all the way to the line, and I hope to see Finley Marsh be positive on the selection, who showed that he gets a mile last time. He wore a hood on his penultimate start on handicap debut over a mile, but was too keen and failed to get home. He was still keen when setting a steady gallop here last time, but he showed enough to suggest a small race like this could come his way.

Recommendation: Phantom Shadow - 11/2 with bet365
