4:42pm Ayr - Qazaq (Nap)
The ground is likely to ease from the description on Tuesday morning of good to firm at Ayr, with 6mm of rain overnight Monday and further showers forecast between the time of writing and raceday.
QAZAQ (Nap) has never won on turf and, as a son of Kingman, would not want conditions to deteriorate to anything softer than good, but he was unfortunate not to win at Musselburgh when runner-up on his penultimate start from stall one.
You can put a line through his last start as he had a terrible draw out on the wing, and jockey Greg Fairley had to take a pull and was held up at the back of the ten-runner field. He made modest gains in the home straight but met trouble in running, and you can mark up the run. Cam Hardie takes over in the saddle for the first time – not a regular pilot for Iain Jardine – and he has a good draw in stall three.
A three-time all-weather winner, the five-year-old has been on the go since being sold out of Roger Varian's yard in October, when he was rated 20lbs higher in the weights. Eleven barren starts since October have seen his rating plummet, but he has only raced twice for his new yard on turf, and connections have found what looks like a good opportunity.
If the ground has the word soft in the official description, I will save on Habrdi, who finished second to Ashen over course and distance from today's mark, and he is very well handicapped on his best form when trained in Newmarket.

3:00pm Warwick - Yes And Yes
Tom Desjy will be all the rage in the 3m1f+ handicap chase after his 3m Southwell romp last week, when scoring by over twenty lengths under Sean Bowen. He has been raised 10lbs by the handicapper but carries just a 7lb penalty this afternoon.
I thought that Southwell race fell apart somewhat with the second, a short-priced favourite, flattering to deceive, and I am keen to take him on with the prospect of slower ground and additional yardage an unknown.
YES AND YES wouldn't want soft ground, but that seems unlikely, and he, too, won his last start over a near 3m4f trip at Stratford from a 5lb lower mark. That was grey's first start at a marathon trip, and the drop back in distance is not a help, but he jumped and travelled well before scoring readily last time, and he can follow up.

4:20pm Ffos Las - Hell Hound
HELL HOUND was pulled up on heavy ground on chase debut, but that was his first start following a 467-day absence, and he showed that was not his true running when scoring readily at Southwell from a 6lbs lower mark at the beginning of April.
He was pulled out of a recent race when conditions were deemed too fast over course and distance earlier in the month, having made a note after Southwell that I want to be with him next time. I napped him before he was a late withdrawal here earlier in the month, and, on a sound surface, he would have been a good thing, but this should tell us whether he has the potential to make a decent winter horse going forward or not.
Jack's Mischief and Loki's Mischief will have their supporters, with the former 7lbs better off for the 3l he was behind the latter over 2m5f here earlier in the month. Both have run well on soft ground in the past and will be ready to pounce if the selection does not act on the ground, but I thought he was one to follow at Southwell and am fascinated to see how he copes with underfoot conditions.
