There are five flat meetings, four on turf, in Britain – well, England – today, but they are all competitive cards.

5:10pm Carlisle - Native Instinct (Nap)

The 1m6f handicap is a cracker, as is the concluding 7f handicap, and NATIVE INSTINCT (Nap) drops back down in trip having finished second over an extended mile at Hamilton on his seasonal reappearance when a beaten favourite.

He was quickly away from the stalls and chased the strong pace set by market rival Izzari, and perhaps he was too near that fast pace, given the latter finished last, beaten by over twelve lengths. The selection was last off the bridle at Hamilton, and the hope is that a return to this seven-furlong trip will suit.

Ed Bethell has had only one winner from his last twenty-five runners, and he has seen a couple disappoint in that period, but he has also had ten runners finish second or third in the last two weeks, and he deserves a change of fortune.

Native Instinct has been left on a mark of seventy-four. This trip looks his optimum; he looks to have a plum draw in stall one, and he has run well from a mark of eighty back in July.

Jake Dickson takes 7lbs from the back of Bay Breeze. I do not think the latter has much chance today, but I have been really impressed with the jockey in the last couple of weeks. His weight going forward might be an issue, but he is excellent value for his 7lbs claim.

Recommendation: Native Instinct (Nap) - 4/1 with bet365

3:10pm Redcar - Ammoony

We have not yet reached the time of the season when I favour the classic generation against their elders in handicaps – three-year-olds receive 14lbs from their elders over ten furlongs – but I will make an exception in a cracking fillies' handicap.

The five-year-old Mythical Bird had flown before AMMOONY got going at Lingfield last time, with the latter poorly positioned from her moderate draw. She finished well into second, and the form of her penultimate run at Wolverhampton over 8.5f is worth closer examination.

Tom Clover's three-year-old was beaten a head at Dunstall Park by Lizzana in receipt of 3lbs. The latter did run wide off the home turn but was all out to beat the selection. Lizzana has since finished second in the Italian 1000 Guineas – behind Ed Dunlop's Just Call Me Angel - and is now rated ninety-seven, whereas Ammoony can race from a mark of just sixty-nine this afternoon.

Cieren Fallon takes over in the plate this afternoon, she has a ground-saving draw in stall one and looks sure to run a big race, although as stated previously, this is a hot heat.

If the betting allows, I will also back Fanciulla Del West, who may not have got home over 12f at Yarmouth last time but travelled well to two furlongs out against a smart Gosden-trained three-year-old, Brilliant Star, who is now rated ninety-two.

Ed Walker's filly is a strong, imposing filly, and she will leave her current mark of sixty-eight behind in time. She is a half-sister to no fewer than thirteen winners and is entitled to come on for her Yarmouth run, which was her first since she was beaten a length at Newcastle over a mile in December.

Recommendation: Ammoony - 11/4 with bet365

6:10pm Windsor - Chimes Of Thunder

I know I have my cliff horses, and I am not recommending Primo Lara in the Lingfield opener – finished last at Wolverhampton returning from a break last time – but I know I will back him against that lot.

A less speculative selection is CHIMES OF THUNDER in the £40,000 fillies maiden at Windsor this evening, which has, unsurprisingly, attracted unexposed and well-bred types from many of the leading yards.

Tahalel has been a beaten market leader in her last two starts, including at Doncaster on her reappearance over 7f last month when third beaten less than a length by the William Haggas-trained Proposal. She was rallying close home and gives the impression the mile will see her in a better light.

Haggas should know where he stands with Chimes Of Thunder, who was beaten a neck, in receipt of 7lbs, by the Gosdens' Symbol Of Majesty, and do note the winner runs in the 7.30 at Wolverhampton later in the evening from a mark of eighty-six.

I would expect Tom Marquand to try and get to the lead on the selection, given she looks as if she will get further than a mile in time. Indeed, the battle for the lead will be fascinating as Withtearsinmyeyes led at Wolverhampton when second – beaten more than two lengths by another Gosden filly Seet.

It promises to be an informative and hotly contested maiden, but the vote goes to Chimes Of Thunder.

Recommendation: Chimes Of Thunder - 13/8 with bet365
