2:51pm Redcar - Per Contra (Each-Way) (Nap)

Lucky Hero has been raised 10lbs for landing his last two, including over course and distance on just his second start over ten furlongs on his penultimate start. That was in an apprentice race, and he escaped a penalty when hosing up at Newmarket last time in a moderate three-runner event.

The classic generation still receive 6lbs from their elders at this stage of the season over the trip and Conor Whiteley – who was in the plate when successful here in July – returns to the saddle taking off a valuable 5lbs.

Well drawn in stall two, I will likely save on the three-year-old if prices allow, but I believe PER CONTRA (Each-Way) (Nap)   has dropped to a favourable mark and he is recommended as an each-way alternative to the likely market leader.

The five-year-old began the flat season from a mark of eighty-nine, and he can race from an 11lbs lower mark this afternoon. His best form is, arguably, on the all-weather, but he has bits of form on turf that suggest he is well treated at present, and he is adaptable regarding underfoot conditions although, in an ideal world, he would prefer slower ground. Conditions were described as good on Tuesday morning.

The selection ran his best race of the season in a stronger race at Beverley last time on heavy ground and has been dropped a pound for the outing although he must race from his old mark today. Tim Easterby has averaged a winner a day in the last fortnight, and he will be keen to get a win into this inmate although they do have the option of having a break and running on the AW this winter off what is a favourable mark.

Roger Varian's Fox Avatar and the filly Percy's Daydream are others to consider, but the vote goes to Per Contra.

Recommendation: Per Contra (Each-Way) (Nap) - 6/1 with bet365 (3 places)

This is Charlie's Nap of the Day selection - see how it stacks up against Alan Kelly's pick too.

3:54pm Redcar - Al Fujairah

The filly Sweet Kiss – another Tim Easterby inmate - was only beaten a nose in first-time cheekpieces over course and distance last time, and a 2lbs rise is fair. She improved in the second half of the season last year with two wins in this month and is only 3lbs higher than her last winning mark.

She looks the one to beat, but marginal preference is for the three-year-old and handicap debutant AL FUJAIRAH, who steps up in distance on handicap debut for Iain Jardine, having stayed on well when second at Hamilton over their extended mile last time.

The three-year-old is out of a winner from 12 to 15f, including at listed level, although she has only produced one previous winner. Jack Callan takes over in the plate for the first time, and the hope is that the sequence of his form figures of 4-3-2 is continued although he may improve again for the step up to 12f going forward.

Ed Dunlop's Golden Caviar has been gelded since his last run and he, too, makes his handicap debut. A market move would be significant, although he was 8l behind the second when last of three at Haydock last month, and the second has been well beaten off a mark of seventy-eight subsequently. The gelding operation will have to have made a difference if he is to defy his mark of seventy, the same as the Scottish raider.

Recommendation: Al Fujairah - 4/1 with bet365

The one horse I am most looking forward to seeing run today is Act Of Generosity in the 3:15pm at Carlisle, but I can't recommend him as his form to date gives him zero chance against Blue Hercules in the 11f Maiden. The latter was given a dreadful ride over 12f at Ffos Las last time – went off far too quick – but will appreciate the drop back down in distance.

He is rated eighty-five, but I am convinced Act Of Generosity – and Flagbearer for that matter – are better long-term prospects. If the Roger Varian-trained three-year-old is backed, then I will support the Godolphin-owned son of Sea The Stars.

3:00pm Sedgefield - Glenmalure Flyer

Three last-time out winners in the four-runner field for the 3m2f+ handicap chase at Sedgefield including Monday's Perth winner Sir Carnegie who carries a 5lbs penalty for that success. It will be interesting to see if Mickey Bowen stops off at the Durham track on the way back from Scotland to his South Wales base or whether he only declared the six-year-old if he was an early casualty at Scone Palace.

I don't think Thank You Blue will stay and the hope is that the mare GLENMALURE FLYER can maintain her progress having impressed at Stratford from an 8lbs lower mark on ground no better than good and certainly not as fast as the official good to firm. The mare has been raised 16lbs for her two successes since joining Dan Skelton, but she should get a good tow into the race from Limerick Leader, who made all over 3m at Bangor on Friday but has to prove his stamina for this additional quarter of a mile and more.

Recommendation: Glenmalure Flyer - 11/10 with bet365
